Family of Five Walking to Churchby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 122:1

I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.

The verse is a cry of gladness and joy at the invitation to go into the house of the Lord. That house stood at Jerusalem, the place where God's presence was revealed. The presence there was His Shekinah glory between the cherubim in the sanctuary.

It was sung by bands and caravans of Israelite pilgrims from all parts of the land going up to Jerusalem for the annual feasts, Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. Those caravans gathered old and young, rich and poor, shepherds, herdsmen, fishermen and others, traveling on foot by short stages. On the road they sang it while seeing around them the hills where the heathen had kindled their altar fires.

They relieved the journey with sacred songs morning and evening, and the gladness of nature awakened their own glad hearts and gratitude to the Giver of all good. It was sung by thousands of voices with trumpet and cymbals. It was chanted as a chorus of thanksgiving by hundreds of voices at the sound of the signal trumpet with music of cymbals.

It expresses reverential awe, joy and delight in standing within the gates of Jerusalem, where the tribes go up to give thanks to the name of Jehovah. It expresses union in prayer for wisdom and strength, and thanksgiving for deliverance and for God's majesty, glory and wonderful works. It expresses a devotion that brought the fairest fruits and offerings of every kind, with no one coming empty-handed to present gifts to Jehovah.
