Shepherd David Gazes at the Starry Night SkyBible World
8:1Psalms 8:1
O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
David uttered this exclamation as he considered God's works in the earth and the love manifested for man. It declares how excellent the Lord's name is in all the earth and that He has set His glory above the heavens. His name is excellent because created works reveal His character, power, and parental love to mankind, with the adorned heavens and the grand and beautiful earth giving evidence of who He is. The beauties of nature display His power and wisdom and magnify Him, turning the mind toward the Maker and calling for contemplation, worship, and praise.
Christ is the Lord whose name is excellent, as the brightness of the Father's glory and the express image of His person. He is the pattern of righteousness and the Guide, Preserver, and Governor to be honored. When Jesus rules over the earth, creation will be subdued to Him, the groaning and lamentation of creation will cease, the earth will again be declared very good, and songs of praise and thanksgiving will be heard. At His second coming with power and glory He will be king over all the earth and honored in all the earth, receiving the dominion over creation once given to Adam and forfeited by sin, with the animal kingdom having its nature changed, universal peace prevailing, and the groaning of creation giving way to praise.
