Revelation 14:1
And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads. And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.
The verse shows the Lamb standing on Mount Zion with the hundred forty-four thousand who have His Father's name in their foreheads, redeemed from among humanity and from the earth as the living translated firstfruits to God and the Lamb who have gained the victory over the beast and its image, mark, name, and number. Having the Father's name in the forehead means receiving the seal of the living God, His indelible mark of ownership and sovereign rule written not visibly but in minds consecrated to serve Him with intellect and heart. That seal is found in the fourth commandment, which alone names the Lawgiver as Creator of heaven and earth and is commemorated in the seventh-day Sabbath, setting His loyal people apart from those who worship the beast and receive its mark. They are the saints of the last days who keep God's commandments and the faith of Jesus, follow the Lamb in trustful obedient consecration on earth, and stand faithful, truthful, and without guile or fault before His throne. Having come out of great tribulation through the time of trouble without an intercessor, washed white in the blood of the Lamb, they stand on the sea of glass before the throne to sing the new song of Moses and the Lamb that no other company can learn, where the Lamb shall feed them and God shall wipe all tears from their eyes.
Chapter Setting and Message
Revelation 14:1 belongs to the last message of mercy to be given to the world, given when Christ entered the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary to perform the closing work of atonement, and its proclamation is immediately followed by the Son of man coming in glory to reap the harvest of the earth. The chapter presents the everlasting gospel in a threefold message that distinguishes Christ's church at His appearing, tests the world, and results in a people who keep God's commandments and have faith in Jesus. Received and acted upon, these messages prepare a people to stand in the great day of God.
The chapter is of deep interest, to be soon understood in all its bearings and proclaimed again with distinct force, preparing for the powerful proclamation of the gospel when the earth is filled with the knowledge of God and salvation. By the first, second, and third angels' messages God has separated a people from the churches and from the world to stand as a light in the earth and bring them into sacred nearness to Himself, as He called ancient Israel. He has made them the depositaries of His law and committed to them the great truths of prophecy for this time, a sacred trust like the holy oracles committed to ancient Israel to be communicated to the world. Those who accept the light of God's messages go forth as His agents to sound the warning throughout the length and breadth of the earth, actuated by the love manifested in Christ's sacrifice so that nothing hinders this all-important work for time, far-reaching as eternity, with the cross speaking to every soul that accepts Jesus of the worth of the soul and the charge to preach the gospel to every creature.
The first and second angels' messages have been proclaimed in years past, and the third is now being given to fallen churches and to those who have never yet heard the truth for this time. The third angel's message includes the other two messages and makes prominent the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, and proclaiming it is the most important work, a solemn warning to the world that exalts the Sabbath of Jehovah. The chapter's warning against worshiping the beast and its image and receiving its mark is directed to the world by those who keep God's commandments and the faith of Jesus, and God's people should study the chapter carefully.
The warning messages call those who hear them to show genuine faith and spirituality and to live separately from the world, calling God's people out from the world to an experience very different from that of the Jewish nation who rejected Christ. They are not to be treated as secondary to medical missionary work, and health institutions are called to turn from worldly practices. The chapter is associated with a special movement whose relation to the past and the future is connected with Christ's closing work in heaven and the closing work of His people on earth. It stands within the prophecies of Revelation 12 to 18 that are being fulfilled, and holds part of the last message of warning that all are to hear and that is now to be given before the destruction of the beast, false prophet, dragon and wicked and the triumph and reign of Christ.
The call to worship God as Creator and keep His commandments especially calls people to keep the fourth commandment, since the Sabbath alone directly identifies God as Creator, keeps the distinction between Creator and creatures and the reason for worship before people, and is a sign of loyalty to the true God. As part of the third angel's message the verse calls for decided efforts now not only in lands far off but in neglected places close by where multitudes dwell unwarned and unsaved, with the work in the cities now to be regarded as of special importance. This long-delayed work is to be done by carefully selected workers laboring two and two in harmony with the counsel of experienced leaders under the direction and commission of Jesus Christ. Historically after the 1844 disappointment the three angels' messages stood as present truth together with light on the sanctuary question and the Sabbath truth, and the third angel's message was carried from city to city and from town to town through the cities of the East, shining light on the pathway of scattered believers concerning the near advent of the Lord, with some receiving the message gladly while others turned from the light and lost their hold on God and His truth.
The three messages gave light for understanding what was accomplished on the tenth day of the seventh month, which those who lost faith before this explanation was clear had not patiently waited and watched to see.
Identity of Hundred Forty-Four Thousand
The opening view begins a connected sequence reaching forward into the future and ending with the complete redemption of the 144,000. They have gained the victory over the beast and its image, its mark, its name, and the number of its name. They belong to God and are redeemed from among humanity and from the earth. They are the living translated from the earth and are counted as firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.
The verses do not identify the 144,000 as people raised at Christ's resurrection. They are those who came out of great tribulation, having passed through the time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation. They endured the anguish of Jacob's trouble and stood without an intercessor through the final outpouring of God's judgments. They were delivered because they washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb, and at their deliverance their faces shine with the glory of God.
To be sealed with the Father's name is to be numbered with that company standing with the Lamb upon the earth. Those so sealed who die beforehand rest through the time of trouble. They come up at the voice of God to stand upon the earth with them, so they are not to be mourned for themselves but only for the loss of their company by the living, and their death results in good.
The hundred forty-four thousand is a mystery God has not revealed. The meaning of the number and who will be included in it will only be known and understood when the kingdom of heaven is reached. Until then seeking new and strange doctrines about it and letting imagination work upon it must be left aside, with feet planted upon the Word of the living God and what cannot be comprehended left with God. In heaven Christ will lead beside the river of life, open minds to the truths of His Word, unfold mysteries that cannot now be grasped, and give the higher education of the school above.
It has been held that the 144,000 will be Jews who acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah. The company may also include believers from Russia as the truth spreads there.
Father's Name and Seal
Having the Father's name written in the foreheads is receiving the seal of the living God, not a visible mark but God's superscription and indelible mark identifying them as His own possession and showing that He is their sovereign Ruler. As those who bear His name they stand as a separate and distinct people, keeping free from politics and the conflicts of the time so that allegiance to God is clear. The seal is found in the fourth commandment, which alone names the Lawgiver and identifies Him as Creator of heaven and earth, establishing His claim to worship and rightful authority. The seventh-day Sabbath commemorates creation and directs people to the true and living God as Creator, pointing to Him as the sign of His authority.
The verse thereby shows one of the two parties developed in the issue of the great contest, those loyal to God in contrast to those who worship the beast and his image and receive his mark. That distinction marks the faithful after the church's final deadly conflict over enforced worship of the beast on pain of death, standing with the Lamb on Mount Zion in final victory and deliverance. The forehead inscription is represented as the words God, New Jerusalem, together with a glorious star containing Jesus' new name. Those so inscribed are the sealed and perfectly united saints, living saints who hear and understand God's voice announcing the day and hour of Jesus' coming while the wicked mistake it for thunder, and whose faces shine with God's glory as did Moses' face after Sinai, so that even opposers recognize that God has loved them.
Having the name in the forehead means minds consecrated to God in this world, serving Him with intellect and heart, so He can place His name there. While Satan urged accusations to destroy them, holy angels unseen placed upon the pardoned remnant the seal of the living God after they had afflicted their souls for purity of heart. Then pardoned and accepted and honored, clothed in the spotless robe of Christ's righteousness never more to be defiled with names retained in the book of life, their sins are transferred to the originator of sin and they are eternally secure from the tempter's devices. The sealing takes place after the cases of the living and the dead have been decided and before God's wrath is poured out; it does not spare the saints from personal trials and testing, but God watches over them as they are tested. It is God's superscription given after they have been tested and tried to those who trust the Lord implicitly in a life where religion and business are one and not separate.
Christ's future glory, glimpsed by the disciples at the transfiguration, helps show the glory revealed in John's view of Christ in heaven standing on Mount Zion with the 144,000 who bear the Father's name on their foreheads, redeemed from the earth, devoted to following the Lamb, and faultless before God.
Character and Faithfulness
Revelation 14:1-5 portrays the character of God's people in the last days, the 144,000 standing with the Lamb on Mount Zion and bearing the Father's name in their foreheads, redeemed from the earth and from among humanity as firstfruits to God and the Lamb, singing a new song no one else can learn, following the Lamb wherever He goes, faithful and truthful and without guile in mouth and spirit and without fault before God's throne. They are a company transformed to reflect Christ, professing to be children of God, standing girt for holy service and clothed in white linen which is the righteousness of the saints. Their marked character is freedom from guile, and having the Father's name means minds consecrated to God in this world, serving Him with intellect and heart.
Following the Lamb with Him on Mount Zion and in the courts above requires first following Him on earth in trustful, loving, willing, confident, truthful obedience as the flock follows the shepherd, not fretfully and capriciously and fitfully nor only for advantage. This means choosing to follow, keeping His commandments, copying His example in daily life, making His life practice their life practice and bringing the will into conformity to His will so they reveal Him, suffering for His sake with unfailing trust, standing for Him girt with the whole armor, not bowing the knee to Baal, and joining heavenly angels in saving those ready to perish and seeking lost sheep in present truth without waiting until translation to begin. In context with verse 12 they are the saints who keep God's commandments and have the faith of Jesus. They keep the Sabbath of the fourth commandment sanctified by God as creation's memorial, and refuse the spurious sabbath instituted to erase that memorial and bring worldwide apostasy against God's law, in contrast to idolaters who give a man-made institution the glory God requires for His Sabbath and compel others to worship it, and they do not bow to decrees of earthly rulers against the authority of the King of heaven and will escape the retributive judgments poured out without mixture of mercy upon unrepentant despisers of God's law.
They are the loyal and true and the faithful and loyal subjects of God's kingdom who keep His law, standing through the church's final deadly conflict with the beast and its image and enforced worship of the beast on pain of death, and while exalters of Sunday deprive them of liberty of conscience and bring them before magistrates and judges and pronounce sentence against them, delivering them into prison and the chain gang and even condemning them to death, they stand as the loyal and true whose place with the Lamb shows final victory and deliverance, while the persecutors by oppression show determined and obstinate contempt for Jehovah's laws before the universe. They are the tried, tempted, yet faithful remnant and despised remnant, pardoned and accepted and honored after afflicting their souls for purity of heart, clothed in glorious apparel with the spotless robe of Christ's righteousness never more to be defiled, with names retained in the Lamb's book of life enrolled among the faithful of all ages, washed white in the blood of the Lamb, to be as kings and priests unto God with a fair mitre set upon them, eternally secure because their sins are transferred to the originator of sin after they resisted the deceiver and were not turned from loyalty by the dragon's roar. God's seal, which is the Father's name written in their foreheads as they stand with the Lamb, identifies people whose characters are pure and fit for heaven, and it is not placed on the impure, ambitious, worldly, deceitful, or false in speech, but requires rejecting worldly ambition and love of the world and falsehood and deceit and being without spot before God and prepared for heaven.
Their sealing belongs to the closing sealing work of the church when they will stand without fault before God's throne, and it is connected with the pure mark of truth wrought by the Holy Spirit, given because they grieve over sins committed among God's professed people and love purity and God's honor. They are marked by deep consecration and unity as sealed and perfectly united saints, and united labor helps prepare for that unity. The verse identifies the company of those who have a living connection with Jesus Christ and are clothed with His salvation, who after following the message heaven sends and following the Lamb step by step into the sanctuary seek pure hearts and clean lips so speech is free from impurity and unruliness. Those who bruise, imprison, humiliate, and oppress their fellow men to compel worship of a false sabbath are not the ones who stand on Mount Zion and follow the Lamb.
Final Victory and Glory
They stand with the Lamb upon Mount Zion on the crystal sea of glass mingled with fire before the throne of God, having the harps of God, and they are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple while He who sits on the throne dwells among them. They sing a new song before the throne which no one else can learn, the song of Moses and the Lamb, a song of deliverance drawn from their unique experience such as no other company ever had. Having seen the earth wasted with famine and pestilence and the sun scorching men with great heat, and having themselves endured suffering, hunger and thirst, they shall hunger no more neither thirst any more neither shall the sun light on them nor any heat, for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne shall feed them and lead them unto living fountains of waters and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
Only the 144,000 enter the glorious temple on Mount Zion, where their names are engraved in gold on tables of stone inside it. Taken together in the cloud for seven days ascending to the sea of glass, they stand there in a perfect square. Jesus Himself brings crowns and with His own right hand places them on their heads, and gives them harps of gold and palms of victory, and they are all clothed with a glorious white mantle from shoulders to feet. Some crowns are very bright and others less bright, some heavy with stars and others with few, yet all are perfectly satisfied with their crowns. With angels about them they march over the sea of glass to the gate of the city, where Jesus opens the pearly gate and bids them enter because they have washed their robes in His blood and stood firmly for His truth, and they march in with a perfect right to the city to see the throne of God, the pure river of water coming out of the throne, and the tree of life on either side of the river. Jesus calls them to enter the city to supper, where He Himself will gird Himself and serve them, and promises that if faithful they will eat of the fruit of the tree of life and drink of the water of the fountain and go back to earth no more.
They are the living saints who hear and understand God's voice announcing the day and hour of Jesus' coming while the wicked mistake it for thunder and an earthquake. When God speaks, the Holy Spirit is poured out and their faces shine with God's glory, as Moses' face did after coming down from Mount Sinai. Their sealed and united holy state enrages the wicked, who try to seize them but fall helpless when they invoke the Lord. If faithful they will have the privilege of visiting all the worlds God has made and viewing His handiwork and seeing His works.
On the way to the mount the company encounters martyrs slain for Jesus and an innumerable company of little ones. After finishing their course they stand with their loved ones on Mount Zion with Jesus, giving Him the glory by casting their crowns at His feet. They shall reign forever and ever, not going in and out as those who beg a place, but as children welcomed to inherit the kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world and to enter into the joy of their Lord.
Call to Belong and Follow
The Lamb standing on Mount Zion with the 144,000 having the Father's name in their foreheads presents a company transformed to reflect Christ, faithful while facing opposition for standing with a great truth before the world, to which all must aspire to belong with the hope of eternal glory kept in view. Joining it requires the greatest concern that life be refined and purified to reflect the divine likeness, being washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb, arrayed in the righteousness of Christ, and rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God. Their character, bearing the Father's name, following the Lamb wherever He goes, and being faithful and without guile, shows that the everlasting gospel must be preached and practiced in true missionary work done by God's wisdom rather than human wisdom. That work means carrying the third angel's message, which belongs to the whole world, to the world in clear straight lines, clearly and distinctly and in its distinctive features as Christ revealed them to John.
Standing with Him there depends on standing for Him on earth first as the Lord's people who have not bowed the knee to Baal, girded with the whole armor. It means being engaged with heavenly angels in the work of present truth in saving those ready to perish and hunting for lost sheep. Following the Lamb in the courts above requires following Him below by keeping His commandments and copying His example in daily life as a flock trustfully follows its shepherd, not following fitfully or capriciously or only for advantage, but by choosing to follow, by suffering for His sake with unfailing trust, by making His life practice their life practice and bringing the will into conformity to His will so as to reveal Him, without waiting until translation to begin.
Mount Zion is where the redeemed stand with the Lamb, and being an overcomer is connected with joining that redeemed company, so it is best to choose now to be an overcomer in order to have that place. It is the final standing of those who become Christians and overcome the temptations of the enemy. This hope belongs even to young children who repent, believe, are baptized, and desire to follow Christ without delay, looking forward to at last standing on Mount Zion with Jesus without waiting months to prove faithfulness.
Mount Zion expresses the hope of finally standing with the Redeemer and with God's people after the weary pilgrimage of the Christian road is finished. Reaching it requires running in the way of God's commandments and traveling the whole length of the road to the end, then laying off the armor at the feet of the Redeemer. Standing there is certain for one who trusts God as guide and stay with a trust as firm as life itself, to be kept till death, and God will set the feet of those who so trust Him there. Those who stand there are pardoned from all transgression and accepted by Christ because they loved Him and washed their robe of character white in the blood of the Lamb, a pardon secured by the great High Priest who broke the fetters of the tomb and ascended on high to lead captivity captive and bring His pardon to every repentant soul, and their soon standing with Christ there is very near now that the work is nearly done, calling for trusting God with the future, being of good courage, and praising the Lord. Christ holds every one of them in unfailing care, having engraved the names of His people on the palms of His hands and never losing His interest in any dependent soul.
