Ăn'e-mŏm'e-ter, n.

noun

n. [Gr. ἄνεμος, wind, and μέτρον, measure.] An instrument or machine for measuring the force and velocity of the wind.

☞ Anemometers are of various forms, and indicate the force directly, as against a plate compressing a spring, or the velocity, as by the revolution of a wheel, carrying vanes or hemispherical cups. They are often self-registering.

An anemometer with a spiral mechanism and a large oval vane is shown.
