Bāp'tis-ter-y, n.
n. [Lat. baptisterium, Gr. βαπτιστήριον, Fr. baptistère.] A place where the sacrament of baptism is administered. “The . . . baptistery and leaning tower [at Pisa] are very well worth seeing.” Addison.
☞ Primitively, baptisteries were in buildings separate from the church; but in the sixth century they were taken into the church-porch, and afterward into the church itself.
