The general escaped to a steamer, and the steamer was stoned and its windows smashed......The police authorities of Hamburg have prohibited the holding of five projected socialist meetings, called for the purpose of discussing the emperor’s recent speech regarding imprisonment of strike promoters. This is the beginning of stringent measures which are to be taken against socialism and anarchism in Germany......Since General Kitchener’s victory at Omdurman and Khartoum, no word has been received from his forces, which are pushing up the Nile to take possession of Fashoda......Colonel Picquart, who has been frequently mentioned in connection with the Dreyfus case in France, has been arrested, and the agitation over this matter continues unabated......The island of Barbadoes is reported to be in a state of semi-anarchy. Domestic.—Earthquake shocks were felt in South Dakota and Nebraska on September 16, but no serious damage is reported from these disturbances......The battle-ships Oregon and Iowa have been ordered to sail for Manila as soon as preparations for the voyage are completed. Six supply ships will be despatched as tenders, four carrying coal and one refrigerated meats and vegetables. The sixth is a distilling ship, which will furnish fresh water during the voyage. Cuba.—The work of the evacuation commission in Cuba is moving more slowly than in Porto Rico. There are about 150,000 men for whom Spain must provide transportation, and as these troops evacuate the different provinces, American troops must take their place. Provision must be made for disarming the insurgents and the Cuban volunteers in the Spanish army. The Spanish demand the retention of their arms, and that they be allowed to retire with colors flying. A general plan of the withdrawal has been agreed upon by the commissioners and submitted to the two governments......The relief ship Comal is still unable to land her 1,000,000 rations for the starving Cubans, as the Spanish authorities at Havana demand duties amounting to $60,000 in gold. It is reported, however, that two ports, Bahia Honda and Jucaro, have been evacuated by the Spanish, and food will be entered at these points. There is much distress for lack of food in all the provinces.
The Philippines.—The archbishop of Manila, who, at the beginning of the war, so violently attacked all things American, has now come out in favor of annexation of the islands to the United States, and lays upon the Catholic orders of Capuchins, Dominicans, Franciscans, and Benedictines the entire blame for the present conditions in the island. These are religious orders that have grown wealthy at the expense of the islanders, and been instrumental in their oppression......The insurgents are recruiting and drilling, ostensibly to protect themselves in case America turns them over to Spain......Orders have been received at San Francisco for 6,000 of the troops stationed there to proceed to the Philippines, and these will be despatched as soon as transports can be provided. The loss is estimated at $325,000......An explosion was caused in a grain elevator at Toledo, Ohio, on September 20, by the spontaneous combustion of dust. Fire followed the explosion, and eight persons were burned to death before help could reach them, and sixteen others were more or less seriously injured. The fire destroyed 500,000 bushels of grain.
Porto Rico.—The work of the evacuation commission in Porto Rico has been practically completed so far as plans for the evacuation of the island are concerned. There has been no friction between the commissioners of the two countries, and it is stated that within three weeks the Americans will be in full control. Many of the Spanish soldiers have signified their intention of remaining in the island and becoming American citizens. The evacuation of outlying positions has already begun, and these are being occupied by American troops.

The New Number
Of the Apples of Gold Library (No. 55) is written by Arthur T. Pierson, D.D., and entitled “Twelve Principles of Holy Living.” Price, 50 cents per 100. It is a scriptural portrait of a strong, symmetrical Christian character. All should have it—both the portrait and the reality. The former will prove of great help in securing the latter. It is a very desirable tract for general circulation, and small enough to inclose in a letter.

BIBLE SANCTIFICATION: A CONTRAST OF TRUE AND FALSE THEORIES:
By Mrs. E. G. White.
This is a pamphlet of only 84 pages, but its value is not to be judged by its size. It is just what its title indicates: a faithful presentation of Bible truth on this important subject, and an exposure of the false theories prevailing in regard to it. Every believer in Bible truth should read it. Buy it, read it, and lend it to your neighbors. Price, 10 cents.

The Closing Words
Of a touching Samoan Romance as told in that excellent little volume, “Fiji and Samoa,” are as follows:—
“The young queen cried, ‘O, Thama, stay, stay!’ It was too late. Thama would not stand in the way of Samoan peace and unity.
“Instantly there followed a wild cry of agony, and a second plunge from the cliff. The low waves then sung a tender dirge over Samoa’s lovely queen and the unselfish Thama.”
This book not only gives this story entire, but many interesting items concerning the islands of Fiji and Samoa. Price, in cloth 60c., in paper 25c.
The Young People’s Library series, of which the above is volume one, contains twelve numbers, each complete in itself. Descriptive circular on application.

The Battle Hymn of the Kingdom
By Editor
There will be issued from this office within a week or so a beautiful poem, “The Battle Hymn of the Kingdom,” finely illustrated with fifteen specially prepared half-tone engravings. It is written by Frances Eugenia Bolton. The poem is intensely dramatic, and scriptural; and every stanza is itself a picture or series of pictures, some of the many of which the artist has strikingly portrayed. We give one of the verses by permission.
“Through the open scroll of heaven, that shall fold and roll aside,
We shall see the Man of sorrows, who for love was crucified,
’Mid the untold hosts of heaven, King of kings and glorified,—
Our God is marching on.”
The price is wonderfully cheap, only 25 cents, cloth bound. It will make a beautiful birthday or holiday gift.
If Sunday Were the Sabbath
By Editor
“If.”—The editor of the Christian Advocate, in an article against unnecessary Sunday bicycling, taking for his text an expression from a cycling paper, says: “Look closely at it: ‘Whatever is wicked on one day, . . . is also wicked on any other day.’ Because there are certain things, such as lying or stealing, equally wicked on every day, it is claimed that this is true of all things; and because some things are confessedly wicked on one day of the week, it is affirmed that these must be wicked on any other day. But neither of these statements is true. It is wicked for a workman, paid for his time, to neglect his work; but it would not be wicked for him not to work on a day for which he is not paid. It is not wicked for a man to carry on any ordinary business from morning till night on Tuesday; but if Sunday be a day set apart by God for the promotion of spiritual and moral life and culture, it would be wicked for him to carry on that same business on that day.” The italic “if” is ours. The word is well put in; for nowhere has God “set apart” Sunday “for the promotion of spiritual and moral life and culture.” The remainder of the article proceeds on the assumption that God has done this; but He has not, and every one who knows the Word knows that He has not. We have no defense to make for the demoralizing influence of demoralizing bicycle riding; but we do protest against the setting forth of Sunday as the Sabbath of the Lord.
It Does not Change the Truth.
—A subscriber sends a copy of a holiness paper which contains two articles on the Sabbath question, in which the writer’s chief proofs are negative. We have not time to answer all those who rise up and cry, as does this article, “It is not so.” Men can contradict anything and everything, but that does not change the truth. For instance, it is said, “From the creation down two thousand five hundred years, no command was given to keep a Sabbath.” In a way this might be considered so; that is, no command is recorded; but this is also true of many other moral duties. Where is the command against idolatry, or profanity, or adultery? But the whole book of Genesis, which is a book of history and not of law, shows conclusively that all the moral duties of the Decalog, including the Sabbath, were in force. Gen. 2:2, 3 is proof that a command concerning the Sabbath must have been given to man. It could not have been sanctified, set apart, or appointed to man, for whom it was made (Mark 2:27), except as God gave directions concerning it.

Hope in God’s Love and Power
It is not our worth, but God's love and power, in which we are to hope. He who spoke a world from naught, who in His love died to save His enemies, is able to save all to the uttermost who come unto God by Him.
Rather Popular.—
“Pride, fulness of bread, abundance of idleness,” and failure to help the poor and needy, are not considered very heinous sins, are they? They are rather popular. And yet these were the foundations of Sodom’s guilt. See article on page 5.
The Desire of Ages
“The Desire of Ages” is the finest subscription book, from the standpoint of the printer’s art, ever put before the public from the Pacific Press; but the mechanical work, good as it is, does not, nor can it, equal the excellence of the subject matter. Every one should read it. It contains untold treasures of truth.
Senator Gray Appointed Peace Commissioner
We noted in our last that Justice White, of the Supreme Court, had been appointed, presumably at the request of Archbishop Ireland, as one of the peace commissioners to negotiate between this country and Spain. Since that note was written we have learned that he declined, and Senator Geo. Gray, of Delaware, has been appointed in his place. See our news columns.
True Exaltation.
Would you like to be a leader? Then follow Christ. See Matt. 4:19. Would you like to be called “great in the kingdom of heaven”? Then do and teach the commandments of God. Chap. 5:19. Do you desire exalted position? “He that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” Chap. 23:12. This was the experience of Christ: “Being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name.” Phil. 2:8, 9.
Abolish Army Camp Canteens
A mightier curse and heavier burden than war is alcoholism. Why will not the nations throw this off? Why will not the President, when he could do it with a scratch of his pen, abolish every “canteen” in the various army camps throughout the country? What blessing would follow such an act!
