“Last-Day Tokens,” with Colored Illustrations

For more than a year Elder Loughborough’s pamphlet, “Last-Day Tokens,” has been out of print. We have had to disappoint a great many of our readers as a result, and therefore take pleasure in announcing that he has revised and enlarged the work, and it will be ready about July 1. This edition will contain, among many other new features, 24 full-page plates in colors. These colored plates have been made under the author’s personal supervision and add materially to the value and interest of the work. Price will be 25 cents. Advance orders are solicited.

Those Articles on the Labor Question

We can only supply a very few back copies of the SIGNS containing the articles by Prof. Rine on the “Industrial Problem in the Light of Revelation.” We hope, therefore, that all our readers desiring the full set will order quickly.

“Our Little Friend,” Birthday Number

The Little Friend will soon celebrate its 15th birthday by appearing in a colored cover. A limited number of extra copies of this birthday issue will be printed, and furnished to those who desire to use them in missionary work, at $1.00 per hundred.

New Catalogue of Publications

We have in press a new catalogue of our denominational publications, with complete index. It will be sent free to those desiring copies.

The Lesson Help for Next Quarter

The International Sabbath-school lessons will continue on the book of Revelation for another quarter. The pamphlet “Thoughts on Revelation,” by Uriah Smith, is the standard help. Price 25 cents.

The Southern Watchman—Special Issue

“The Southern Watchman”—Special Issue.—The special signs of the times number of the Southern Watchman, of June 14 is just at hand. It is an excellent number. The two-color illustrations make it bright and attractive, and ought to help greatly in its sale. The prominent figure in the foreground on the illustrated cover is an ancient mail-clad watchman, looking out from his watchtower upon a world in strife and war. The principal articles are as follows: “I Will Come Again,” by James Edson White; “The Manner of Christ’s Coming,” by George I. Butler; “The Last Generation,” by S. N. Haskell; “The Day of Recompense for the Controversy of Zion,” by Mrs. E. G. White; “The Testimony of the Prophets,” and “Testimony of Eminent Authors,” by G. W. Amadon; “The Evangelization of the World a Sign of the End,” by W. A. Spicer; “Our Time and Its Meaning,” by A. G. Daniells; “A Warning Message,” “Present Truth,” “The Thousand Years,” by Geo. I. Butler; “The Second Coming of Christ the Hope of the Church,” “The Temple of God in Heaven,” “Can the Book of Revelation Be Understood?” by S. N. Haskell; “Disasters by Land and Sea,” “Capital and Labor,” “The Money Question,” by James Edson White. There are several other short articles. The price of this issue is only 5 cents. We are sure that such an amount of up-to-date information can be obtained nowhere else for five times the price of the paper. It is worthy of a great circulation, and ought to have it. Maytime and Junetime

These are glorious days through which we are passing in this part of the world. It seems as tho, so far as weather and climate are concerned, that things are as well-nigh perfect as they can be in this sin-cursed earth. A lady who was about to start for Michigan, remarked a few days ago, “I shall have two Mays and two Junes this year.” She had had her May in April and her June in May in the Golden State; she would find them again in Michigan. The beautiful weather recalls the fugitive poem learned when a boy following the plow:—

“If June were always June, And the wild birds sang forever, From four in the morning, their matin tune, And the roses faded never, And the cherries were always ripe, And the great fields red with clover, And all things stayed which are now so dear, And never could come twice over.”

But we need the hot, dry seasons as well in this world of change, to ripen the grass and grain and fruit; and sere leaf and yellowing fields, seen even now in this state, are evidences of promise after all. Therefore, let us be glad for the Junetime, and in the Junetime for all the life and beauty and fragrance which a gracious God showers upon the world, and find in every season its compensations.

The Disappearance of Girls

One of the alarming things in our cities is the constant reports which come to the police of the disappearance of girls. A San Francisco paper remarks: “The disappearance of young girls is becoming altogether too common in this city.” The real trouble lies in the home training, as one paper truly observes. Girls are allowed to go out with chance acquaintances or with young men of questionable reputation, to all sorts of places of recreation and amusement; and we need not wonder at what follows. The Oakland Tribune truly remarks: “What is a familiar sight to the man about town is undreamed of by the good people sleeping soundly in their beds, thinking no evil will come to their boys and girls walking abroad and braving the pitfalls of the dark. If parents would keep themselves better informed as to where their daughters go and with whom they associate, they would have to seek the police for information of their missing daughters, with less frequency than they do now. More than half the time the disappearance is only the culmination of downfall. The mischief has been already done, and this is its logical sequence, if not its necessary consequence. But will parents heed? Or are their own morals too much relaxed?”

Anonymous Correspondence

By Editor

Anonymous Correspondence.—We wish once more to say that anonymous contributions or inquiry will receive no attention in this office. We must have the names of the writers, not necessarily for publication, if they do not desire, but for our own information. There are some who forget to sign their names; there are others who do not think it necessary; there are still others who do not wish to sign their names. We have no means of distinguishing between these classes, and have no time to do so. Some will be disappointed; for this we are sorry, but can not help it. We can not, for obvious reasons, break our rule, and have no time to spend over unsigned communications. If you write an article, place your name and address upon it. It is not sufficient that your name and address be upon the envelope or in the letter accompanying; the article is often separated from these.

Science and Meat-Eating.

A renowned scientist, M. Armand Gautier, of the French Institute, who has spent years in the chemistry of foods, holds that the “father of diseases” is arthritis, especially among the white race in the temperate zone, north of the Alps and the Pyrenees. This condition is due to defective nutrition; that the sufferer really starves to death, tho he eats regularly of the choicest viands of modern civilization, prepared under French cookery. The choice food decomposes in the body, and fills the joints and the blood with urates and oxalates. The remedy suggested is to eat meat sparingly, if at all, and then only boiled meat, because the boiling extracts the toxins, the poisonous materials which cause arthritis. “All such meat broths are poisonous,” he tells us. So we people think them to be nutritious, when they are only stimulating. The meats cut out of the proper bill of fare include nearly everything particularly liked by the up-to-date diner. The learned Frenchman discourages absolute vegetarianism, for he thinks animal food in the forms of milk, fresh butter, and eggs, with preference for the yolks, are needed. Sugar is good for those who exercise in the open air. Bread is, he thinks, eaten too largely. One of the chief difficulties, we opine, in this respect, is that the bread is not thoroughly cooked nor sufficiently masticated. Twice-baked bread is much better.

The World's Fair of 1904.

A wonderful exhibition of what there is in the world will be seen at St. Louis from now till December 1. We have received from the Publicity department of the great Exposition a beautiful map of the grounds. There are over a dozen mammoth buildings, each devoted to some special feature of interest, such as Manufactures, Transportation, Agriculture, etc., besides numerous other buildings of states and nations, societies, and special exhibits. The grounds cover 1,240 acres; forty-four states and fifty foreign countries will participate. There will be on exhibition among many other wonderful things, model schools for blind and deaf in operation; Queen Victoria's jubilee presents; the largest organ in the world, having 10,000 stops; a full-sized model United States warship; ten acres of rose garden; a floral clock, the minute hand of which weighs 2,500 pounds; and many other things too numerous to mention. Good hotel accommodations can be secured at reasonable rates.

Error and Universal Salvation

It sounds strange, doesn’t it, to hear an orthodox evangelistic clergyman say, in announcing the death of two members of his church: “Two of our large family, the church, have passed into the unseen Holy, into which all men haste”? This was not a slip of the tongue; it is so printed. Surely what is it but universal salvation? The primitive error of Eden is responsible for sending souls to their reward or punishment before the judgment; but sensitive souls revolt from the thought of pain and torture, and so practically teach universal salvation. All men are hasting to the grave; how and when they shall come forth from that will depend on the faith and character they possess when they lay down this life. Error breeds a multitude of errors. Truth is consistent.

Songs for Children

Many of our readers know that Mr. F. E. Belden has for years been writing Gospel songs, and preparing song books adapted for all kinds of services in church and evangelical work. He is now collecting material for a book of nature and industrial songs for children, which it is believed will prove a great help in the home and church school. He will be thankful for contributions and suggestions, which, if not used, he will return at the completion of his work. Address him at Battle Creek, Mich.

Perverted Law

Perverted law is clearly shown in the persistence of scars. A bad scar on the arm, for instance, results from a burn. The flesh is twisted, the skin thickened and distorted. Of course it is not normal. It is not in harmony with the law of the skin. Yet the blood there circulates, and changes are constantly taking place as in other parts of the surrounding tissue. The outer skin peels off, perhaps, yet the scar persists under perverted law. And there are many other instances in nature.

South African Sentinel on Capital and Labor

“The South African Sentinel” for April, just came to our table, is an excellent issue on Capital and Labor. It bears on its cover page a modified reproduction of Mr. Mente’s great cartoon on Capital and Labor in our last special issue. The articles are good and to the point, and the paper with adequate circulation ought to be an eye-opener to the people of South Africa.

June Features in McClure’s Magazine

“The Peril of the Icebergs,” by P. T. McGrath, finely illustrated; “A War for Independence,” Miss Tarbell’s number in the Standard Oil History; and William Allen White’s review of Mr. Steffens’s book “The Shame of the Cities,” are the special features which give value to McClure’s Magazine for June.

Sabbath School Worker No. 6

By Editor

No. 6 of the “Sabbath School Worker” is an excellent issue. We wonder how many Sabbath-school teachers use it. We are sure they would find it of help.
