GREAT VARIETY—16 OF THEM

$1.20 AN HOUR FOR A Whole Month

Reported by one who sold the small, inexpensive “home workers’ books.” Some have sold as many as 250 in their home town during November and December. Between now and Christmas, thousands of these books will be sold for gifts. They are in favor, and sell easily, because their stories are true, their lessons inspirational to kind thoughts and good deeds, and because they are attractive, and as interesting as any children’s books.
A genuine opportunity awaits you. Give some time each day to the work. It will pay you well, you will do good, and the experience will do you good. Former training is unnecessary, nor do you have to spend weeks or even days in preparation. The sixteen samples in your prospectus will pretty nearly sell the books for you.
Be one of the several hundred who will start out within the next two weeks. Your tract society secretary will be glad to give you further information. See address in list on page 15.

Facts About Angels

They are swifter in flight than lightning.
Their number is 10,000 times 10,000 at least, for Daniel in vision saw that number and other thousands standing before the throne of God.
Each of us has a guardian angel, who ministers to our spiritual needs, and who bears our prayer messages to the Father.
In the Bible are recorded numerous instances where angels counseled with men of God, delivered them from prison and from places of great peril, and ministered to them in other ways.
A host of angels, beguiled by the great archdeceiver, were cast out of heaven. Their influence is seen in the lives of wicked men. Frequently they impersonate our beloved dead, and thus cause many to believe that man is immortal. Those same beings will appear as angels of light, to deceive and lead many astray.

MINISTRY OF ANGELS

A 27-page book, fresh from the pen of J. H. Evans, is full of facts and information concerning the angels.
In paper covers, 35c; handsomely bound in cloth, 75c. Ten per cent higher in Canada.
It may be secured from your tract society. See address in list on page 15.

LIFE SKETCHES OF ELLEN G. WHITE

Kansas 1878-1915

What an encouragement it is for a well established, prosperous institution or movement to review its beginning and compare it with present attainments! The Seventh-day Adventists of Kansas will therefore read with unusual interest the following paragraphs from page 239 of

LIFE SKETCHES OF ELLEN G. WHITE

“Accompanied by my daughter-in-law, Emma White, I left Battle Creek, October 23, 1878, for the Kansas camp meeting. At Topeka we left the cars and rode by private conveyance twelve miles to Richmond, the place of meeting. We found the settlement of tents in a grove. It was late in the season, and faithful preparation had been made for cold weather. Every tent had a stove.
“Sabbath morning it commenced snowing; but not one meeting was suspended. About an inch of snow fell, and the air was piercing cold. Women with little children clustered about the stoves. It was touching to see one hundred and fifty people assembled for a convocation meeting under these circumstances. Some had come two hundred miles by private conveyance. All seemed hungry for the bread of life, and thirsty for the water of salvation.
“Elder Haskell spoke Friday afternoon and evening. Sabbath morning I spoke encouraging words to those who had made so great an effort to attend the meeting. I told them that the more inclement the weather, the greater the necessity of our obtaining the sunshine of God’s presence.”

THEIR RECENT MEETING

They have just completed their camp meeting for 1915, at which more than a thousand were in attendance. One who was present says:
“They had the most beautiful camp I have ever seen. The large pavilion was located at the upper end of a long stretch of green lawn sloping down to the river. Heavy woods were on either side. The family tents were arranged in a semicircle around the edge of this open park and in front of the woods. The bookstand was located about midway between the pavilion and the dining tent, on the main thoroughfare. Next to it was located the tent of the secretary and treasurer, and just across was the headquarters of the Wichita Sanitarium.”
From the reports given at this meeting, and from other sources, we glean the following items of interest regarding the present standing of the conference: The membership is 2,148. There are 47 church buildings in the state, valued at $59,157. There are also 15 church schools, in which 251 children are enrolled. Their two academies show an investment of almost $30,000. Their sanitarium at Wichita shows an investment of $50,964.53. Contributions to home and foreign work are about $50,000 annually. Their sales of gospel literature for the past nine months were $16,193.30.
It is with the beginnings of various units of work, such as we see in Kansas, and the lessons drawn therefrom, that “Life Sketches of Ellen G. White” has to do. That our readers are interested in such accounts is evidenced by the fact that more than 4,000 copies of the book have already been called for. Price, in cloth, $1.00; in limp leather, $1.50.

“INTO ALL THE WORLD”

This is a photograph of the first shipment of Spanish Seventh-day Adventist books into Salvador, Central America. It is going to our colporteur and evangelist, Mr. J. L. Brown.
Mr. Brown received his education in Fernando Academy, southern California, canvassing during vacations to pay his way. About eight years ago, he went to Mexico as a gospel colporteur. From there he was asked to go to old Spain to open the colporteur work. This he did very successfully, their sales for the past ten months being $11,000 gold. These years of experience have taught him the value of gospel literature. Therefore as he enters this new field, he arranges for a shipment of more than half a ton to meet him at the capital.
This is but one in a series of interesting items showing how widely our publications are being distributed. Last week, nearly five tons of Danish books were shipped to Christiania, Norway. At the same time, the first freight order for Spanish books to the republic of Guatemala was made to Colporteur C. F. Innis, Guatemala City.
An order just received from Australia, for English books, approximates fourteen tons.
The sales at our Kansas City office for September were $30,000 — a little more than twice those of the same month in 1914.
We have received a shipment of 1,500 Finnish “Great Controversy” from Helsingfors, Finland, which, although five months on the way, has arrived in good condition.
These items are evidences of the favor with which our gospel literature, containing as it does the meaning of the events of the times, is received throughout the world.

CAUSES OF FATIGUE

Foods That Cause the Tired Feeling—Other Foods That Impart the Greatest Endurance
By D. H. KRESS, M. D.
In the human body, the wastes that are formed by the breaking down of tissue act as poison to muscles and tissues. The weariness experienced after severe exertion is due to the accumulation of these products. In old age, on account of the inability of the eliminative organs to carry off all the wastes, there is usually a sensation of weariness on exertion. The same is true in persons afflicted with Bright’s disease. The elimination by means of the kidneys being defective, the wastes accumulate rapidly, and constant weariness is experienced.

BEEF EXTRACT AND TISSUE POISON

Beef extract is tissue poison in solution. In the animal, as in man, these wastes are constantly forming, and life depends on their constant elimination. There are two streams of blood in the body,—one carrying to the tissues life gathered from food, air, and water; the other removing impurities from the body.
All the energy that sustains animal life is stored up by the vegetable kingdom,—fruits, nuts, seeds, and herbs. The animal does not store up energy, or life. It breaks it down. The dead products resulting from this tearing-down process necessitate a means by which they may be swept out of the system. This process of elimination is carried on by what is known as the venous circulation.
One blood stream carries life to the tissue. The other carries death from the tissue. When an animal is killed, the life is actually taken; for the life is in the blood that flows out, which is the bright red arterial blood. The venous blood, containing the dead matter, or tissue poison, is retained. In squeezing the juices out of flesh, we really extract the dead and effete products that were on their way to kidneys, lungs, skin, and liver, for elimination.
Beef extract contains more poison than the excretion from the kidneys, for it contains, in addition to the wastes thrown off through the kidneys, the wastes naturally eliminated by skin and lungs and liver . By experiments made upon animals, it has been discovered that an injection of beef extract causes death quicker than an injection of an equal amount of urine.

BEEF EXTRACT AND FROG MUSCLE

Muscles from the leg of a frog have been carefully dissected, and to one end of a muscle a thread has been attached, by which a weight is suspended. Upon stimulating the muscle by means of electrical currents, it contracts, and raises the weight. After several repetitions of this act, the muscle no longer responds to the stimulation. It is then really in a state of poisoning or fatigue. The tissue has been broken down by exercise; and there being no means of elimination, the accumulated waste causes paralysis of the muscle. After carefully bathing this muscle in a mild saline solution, thus washing out the wastes, we find, upon applying electricity, that the muscle contracts and lifts the weight as before.
Place upon a fresh muscle a few drops of beef extract, and it will not respond to stimulation by electricity. This is because the beef extract and the poisons formed by exercise of the muscle are identical. Beef extractive is therefore one of the worst substances that could possibly be taken by athletes. It is not a food, but as stated by one authority, “a veritable solution of poison.”

DEFEATING THE ATHLETE

The athlete who depends upon beef extract, or subsists on a flesh diet, has thrown into his circulation products that are responsible for his defeat; for the eliminative organs are not equal to the task of keeping the muscles freed from these wastes in addition to the wastes normally formed. Muscular fatigue must follow. Athletes have often observed that in running, or riding the wheel, the first hour is very difficult. After this, they obtain their “second wind,” as it is termed. The first stage of fatigue is due to the rapid accumulation of wastes; but after free perspiration has begun, and the doors allowing the escape of these wastes are thrown open, there is less fatigue, for the muscle poisons are then eliminated nearly as fast as formed.
It is evident that the future must be with the athlete who eschews a flesh diet,—beef extracts, etc.,—or with the one who keeps his system freed from these additional wastes by taking his food direct from the vegetable kingdom, and not at second-hand.

HE THAT STRIVETH FOR THE MASTERY

In referring to the Greek athletes, whose habits were most temperate, Paul said: “They which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize.” “Every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things.” The same products that cause muscle fatigue, also cause brain fatigue. They lessen the endurance of the brain worker as truly as they do that of the athlete. Hence it is important for all who would be at their best mentally, and escape brain fog, to keep the blood freed from these wastes by exercise and diet. It is much more important for those whose habits are sedentary, to observe carefulness in diet than it is for those who have outdoor life and exercise.
The wastes that cause physical and mental fatigue also interfere with the spiritual life. There exists a very intimate relation between the physical and the spiritual in man. Paul evidently recognized this when he urged the Christian church to adopt the temperate habits of the Greek athletes. “They do it,” he said, “to obtain a corruptible crown; but we [as Christians practice the same temperance that we may obtain] an incorruptible.”
Many a man has fallen out by the waymentally and spiritually because he has failed to eat and drink to the glory of God.

ENDURANCE NEEDED

Endurance is needed by the Christian as well as by the athlete, in order to succeed. “He that endureth to the end shall be saved.”
In His effort to make of the children of Israel a holy people, who would be able to show forth His virtues, God withheld from them the foods that would interfere with their spiritual development. Instead of this, He gave them manna to eat.
When they lusted for flesh, He granted it. “He gave them their own desire.” Ps. 78: 29. But with it came leanness of soul. “He gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.” Ps. 106: 15.
Leanness of soul can frequently be traced to a physical cause. For this reason, the prophet’s admonition is, “Eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.” Isa. 55: 2. And Peter urged the members of the church in his day to “abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.” 1 Peter 2: 11.
The experiences of ancient Israel have been recorded, in a special sense, for the benefit of those living in the last days, whom God is preparing for the heavenly Canaan. “All these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.” 1 Cor. 10: 11.

Look Out for Pneumonia

Dr. Paulson says, “From now until next spring, pneumonia will claim more victims than will tuberculosis.”
Here is a bit of good advice given in the November Signs Magazine, under the above heading:
“When you finally move your bed indoors, arrange also to move as much of outdoors indoors as is possible. If you find it inconvenient to open your bedroom windows, smash one or two window-panes and forget to repair them. It is better to have a broken window than broken health.”
This article alone may be worth health and dollars to you. The doctor will have something in the magazine every month next year.

GUILTY!

Can it be truthfully said that you are guilty of wasting time — minutes, hours? Our lives are measured by this precious thing. Some call it money. Time once gone cannot return; is beyond recall. God has made us stewards of our time as well as our means, and He will hold us responsible for our use of it.
A Suggestion: Make your spare time count in the future. Plan your home affairs so you can give part or all of your time to selling the Signs of the Times Magazine. Several hundred are now doing this. Good is thus done, and money is earned. Ask your tract society secretary about it. See address in list on this page.
