The Great Disappointment and Prophetic Awakening of 1844
What happens when a prophecy seems to fail but actually reveals a new truth?

In 1844, a momentous global religious awakening known as the Great Advent Movement reached its climax with the expectation of Christ's return, followed by a profound disappointment that led to a deeper understanding of the heavenly sanctuary and the beginning of the investigative judgment Daniel 8:14.
The Great Proclamation
The movement was characterized by the preaching of the first angel's message, "Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come" Revelation 14:6-7. This message was carried to every missionary station in the world and touched nearly every country under heaven, from the new states of South America to China.
Global Reach: In England, 700 ministers of the Church of England raised the cry; in Scandinavia, when laws forbade adults from preaching, the Lord used little children to proclaim the judgment hour.
William Miller’s Role: The movement in America originated with William Miller, a former deist and army captain, who concluded through a study of the 2300-day prophecy of Daniel 8:14 that Christ would return about the year 1843 or 1844 Daniel 12:4.
The Midnight Cry: In the summer and autumn of 1844, a specific "midnight cry" went forth, identifying the tenth day of the seventh month—October 22, 1844—as the date for the expected advent Matthew 25:6.
The Great Disappointment
When the day passed and Jesus did not appear in the clouds of heaven, the believers suffered a trying ordeal and heart-wrenching disappointment. Many abandoned their faith, while others were mocked by the world and faced intense trials. However, this trial was prophetically foretold, as the experience was to be sweet in the mouth but "bitter" in the stomach Revelation 10:9-10.
The Change in Ministration
Through earnest prayer and diligent Bible study, a "little flock" discovered that their mistake was not in the timing, but in the event.
The Sanctuary: They realized the "sanctuary" to be cleansed was not the earth, but the heavenly sanctuary Hebrews 8:1-2.
The Open Door: On October 22, 1844, Jesus finished His ministration in the Holy Place and entered the Most Holy Place of the heavenly temple to begin His final work as our High Priest Revelation 11:19.
Investigative Judgment: This date marked the commencement of the investigative judgment, a process of examining the records of the dead to determine who is worthy of the first resurrection Daniel 7:9-10.
Legacy of the Movement
The 1844 experience served as the foundation for what would become the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It brought to light "present truth," including the binding nature of the Ten Commandments and the sanctity of the seventh-day Sabbath Revelation 14:12. Despite the initial sadness, the light from the sanctuary illuminated the past and gave the believers a renewed mission to "prophesy again" to the entire world Revelation 10:11.
