Church membership is a sacred responsibility, and while the Lord pities and seeks to restore the erring through discipline, there is a point where individuals must be separated from fellowship if they persist in an unchristian course of action. ⛪
The Purpose of Church Discipline
The primary goal of discipline is the safety and health of the church, ensuring a wholesome atmosphere for all members. Christ treats the erring with pity and love, but He also utilizes reproof and correction as necessary discipline for those He has purchased with His blood. This process is modeled after the early church in Jerusalem, where organization was perfected so that order and harmonious action could be maintained.
Grounds for Separation
While the church should move with wisdom and avoid unwise judgment, certain behaviors necessitate disfellowshipping:
Unchristian Conduct: When a member's practices are inconsistent with religion and they become a reproach to the cause of Christ, retaining them would be faithless to the Master.
Persistent Rebellion: Those who hate restraint and discipline, taking a determined position against order, bring about desolating confusion and cannot be safely sanctioned.
Repudiating Principles: If an individual subverts themselves by repudiating the principles and discipline of the Christian profession, they must be recognized as having separated themselves lest the church sanction the principles of the enemy.
Persistent Wrongdoing: Separation becomes necessary for those who move from selfish motives and become a cause of stumbling to their weak brethren.
The Standard for Membership
Every believer is called to be whole-hearted in their attachment to the church, placing its prosperity as their first interest. Membership is not a light matter; those who join the church but do not connect with Christ or follow His example of self-denial are described as "false lights" and "decoys" for Satan. God requires that His work be done with system, exactness, and order.
Exercising Judgment with Care
Ministers and elders are cautioned to "judge not" in a spirit of self-righteousness, but rather to investigate their own hearts and remove the "beam" from their own eye before addressing the faults of others Matthew 7:1-5. Leaders should feed the flock willingly and not as "lords over God’s heritage," but as examples of the truth 1 Peter 5:2-3. When a brother errs, the first steps should always involve seeking their restoration through the "discipline of the word and Spirit of God".
However, for the preservation of the body, the church must eventually cut loose from those whose fanatical or sinful course disgraces the cause of God, as failing to do so makes the church a partaker in those evil deeds. Individuals who refuse to move in harmony with the body and trample discipline underfoot cannot remain in fellowship without jeopardizing the peace of the church.
