The Armor of God: Spiritual Warfare and Divine Protection
What are the components of God's armor?
What is the armor of God?
AdventAI
The armor of God is a complete spiritual defense provided by God, designed to enable believers to stand firm against the temptations and deceptive strategies of the devil and engage in spiritual warfare Ephesians 6:11-12. This divine armor is essential for anyone serving God, as human strength or worldly wisdom alone will prove to be foolishness and bring confusion.
The Components of God's Armor
The whole armor of God, as described by the apostle Paul, includes several crucial pieces:
Truth as a girdle for the loins, which means one's life should be bound by truth Ephesians 6:14. This is a golden chain of truth, providing discernment against fictions and spurious interpretations of scripture.
The breastplate of righteousness, which is not one's own righteousness but the righteousness of Christ, serving as a fortress for the soul and protecting the heart Ephesians 6:14.
Feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, preparing one to walk from house to house carrying truth and to approach souls gently Ephesians 6:15.
The shield of faith, which is above all, to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked Ephesians 6:16. Faith is trust in God's Word and His promises.
The helmet of salvation, providing protection for the mind Ephesians 6:17.
The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God Ephesians 6:17. The Bible is the armory where one can get equipped, and the Spirit uses the Word to pierce the heart.
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, demonstrating a constant connection with heaven Ephesians 6:18.
Why We Need the Armor
We are engaged in a severe and trying warfare, not against other people, but against unseen, supernatural foes—principalities, powers, and rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places Ephesians 6:12. This armor is required to withstand in the evil day and, having done all, to stand firm Ephesians 6:13. It is our only security against falling into sin and being overcome by the enemy.
How to Put On the Armor
Putting on the whole armor of God requires:
Strength in the Lord: We are to be strong not in our own might, but in the power of God's might Ephesians 6:10.
Reliance on God: We must lean upon God, making Him our trust, and not depend on human wisdom or self-sufficiency.
Meekness and Holiness: Cherishing meekness and lowliness of heart is vital for this spiritual attire.
Daily Renewal: Our lives are to be daily "oiled by His grace" and we must seek spiritual nourishment from God's Word.
Prayer and Watchfulness: Earnest, fervent, and constant prayer, along with vigilant watchfulness, is crucial to baffle Satan's strongest efforts.
Consecration: A full consecration to God, denying self and submitting one's heart, body, and spirit to Him, opens the soul to Christ's righteousness.
Study of God's Word: Diligent study and reception of the Word of God are the means to find the armor of truth.
The Blessings of Wearing the Armor
When clothed in the whole armor of God, we are promised strength, protection, and victory. We can be more than conquerors through the grace of Jesus Christ. Heavenly angels will be around us to protect us, and God's omnipotence will supply our needs. This preparation enables us to be decisive witnesses for God, standing loyal and true to His commandments, shining as lights in the world, and being ready for the coming of our Lord. We will have clear, sharp spiritual discernment and an abiding Christ as our constant companion.
