Assurance of Salvation Through Faith and Obedience
Can true assurance of salvation exist without active obedience?
EGW: Assurance of salvation by doing will of God
AdventAI
Assurance of salvation is a living reality for every believer who maintains a connection with Christ and renders a cheerful, perfect obedience to the will of God. This confidence is not based on fleeting emotions or ecstatic feelings, but on the immutable Word of God and the merits of our Redeemer.
🛡️ The Foundation of Assurance
The Merits of Christ: Our hope of heaven is found alone in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, which is imputed to us the moment we believe and stand before God uncondemned.
A Personal Connection: Real assurance is grounded in a living connection with God, where we daily surrender our will to His and acknowledge Him as our personal Savior.
Divine Sufficiency: At baptism, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost pledged to be our sufficiency as we commit to living a new life in harmony with Heaven’s principles.
📜 The Role of Obedience
A Condition of the Covenant: Under the new covenant, the conditions for gaining eternal life remain unchanged; perfect obedience to God’s law is essential.
Joyful Submission: True obedience is not a legalistic burden but the outworking of an inner principle of love for righteousness.
Evidence of Faith: While works do not save us, genuine faith is always manifested in good works, which are the fruits of a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit James 2:10.
👨👩👧👦 Cultivating Confidence in the Home
Parental Examples: As parents become learners with their children and instruct them constantly in the Word, their own growth in truth becomes more rapid, and unbelief disappears.
Refining the Spirit: Maintaining a calm, earnest voice and avoiding a harsh, denunciatory spirit in the home fosters a saving influence that makes impressions for eternity.
Guarding Against Criticism: Parents must be careful not to poison the home atmosphere with criticism of the Lord's workers, as this unsettles the faith and confidence of children.
⚓ Maintaining Assurance Through Trials
Testing of Faith: Trials and adversity are permitted to test our hearts and demonstrate the depth of our real faith in God’s work.
Trusting the Promises: When we face pain or infirmity, we can cling to the "naked promises" of God with firm confidence, knowing He will answer in His own time.
Persevering in Prayer: Constant, earnest prayer is the evidence of our strong confidence in God and is the means through which we receive His daily blessing and help.
⚠️ Conditions and Warnings
A Daily Experience: We must never feel that we are beyond the reach of temptation; salvation is a daily experience of constant dependence on God 1 Corinthians 9:27.
The Danger of Secret Vice: Indulgence in secret sin or being controlled by passion destroys high resolves and prevents one from truly following Christ.
Active Service: Many lose their assurance because they are doing nothing in God's cause; active labor for the salvation of others is a powerful remedy for doubt.
"Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward" Hebrews 10:35. By beholding the perfections of the divine Model, we are transformed into His image and can walk day by day in the light of His presence.
