Biblical Perspectives on Success and Financial Stewardship

Is it wrong to pray for a better house or business success?

AdventAI

My wife does not feel like she may pray for better financial circumstances, or a better house, or better vehicles in our lives. And she feels uncomfortable praying for more employees to grow our business. What does the bible say about praying for success? Does God want us to be successful and wealthy? And my idea of wealth is not being flashy with the biggest hpuse and best cars. My idea of wealth is to live a full life and be able to look after my family and their well being and not to exchange my time for money but to have enough money to be able to trade it for more time.

AdventAI

It is a beautiful and noble desire to seek a life where you can care for your family and prioritize your time for eternal interests, and the Bible provides clear guidance on how God views success, wealth, and our responsibilities as His stewards. God desires for His children to prosper and have their needs met, but He invites us to view every financial blessing as a sacred trust to be used for His glory rather than a means for self-gratification.

The Foundation of Success: Seeking God First

True success and the fulfillment of your needs begin with a correct alignment of your heart with God's priorities. While it is not wrong to desire a comfortable life for your family, the Bible warns against making earthly gain the primary focus of the soul.

  • Prioritize the Kingdom: When we make spiritual prosperity our first interest, God promises to provide for our temporal needs. "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" Matthew 6:33.

  • The Danger of Haste: Success is most stable when built on integrity and patience. Young men and business owners are often tempted by the "short cut" to affluence, but the Scriptures remind us to remain diligent and steady. "Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord" Romans 12:11.

  • Fear of the Lord: Our business transactions must always be marked by the highest integrity. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" Psalm 111:10, and this fear should guide every contract and employee interaction.

Understanding Wealth as Stewardship

The Bible does not teach us to despise wealth, but rather to recognize it as a "talent" entrusted to us by God. You are not the absolute owner of your assets; you are a manager of God’s property. 🏠

  • God is the Rightful Owner: We must remember that we have been "bought with a price" 1 Corinthians 6:20 and that everything we acquire belongs to the Master. "The heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD’s your God, the earth also, with all that therein is" Deuteronomy 10:14.

  • The Purpose of Abundance: God gives us the power to gain wealth so that we can support His work and help those in need. If you pray for more employees or a larger business, let the motive be to provide livelihoods for others and to have more "means" to advance the gospel. "As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God" 1 Peter 4:10.

  • The Account to Be Rendered: Every businessman will eventually hear the call: "Give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward" Luke 16:2. If we use our wealth to bless others and honor God, He will commit even "true riches" to our trust Luke 16:11.

Praying for Better Circumstances

Your wife can find peace in praying for your business and home when those prayers are centered on being a better "light of the world." 💡

  • A Prayer for Wisdom: Instead of praying merely for "more," we can pray for the wisdom to manage what we have with "just balances" and "just weights" Leviticus 19:36.

  • Praying for Time: Your desire to "trade money for time" is spiritual if that time is used for meditation, prayer, and the study of the Scriptures. Ministers and leaders are encouraged to be relieved from "temporal cares" so they can focus on "spiritual interests" Acts 6:2-4.

  • The Heart's Desire: If your prayer for a better vehicle or house is so that you can better serve your family and keep "God's property" (your body and mind) in good condition without being "worn out and exhausted," it is a prayer for health and efficiency in service.

Warning Against the Snares of Wealth

While God grants prosperity, the "love of money" and "land speculation" can become a snare that drowns the soul in perdition.

  • Avoid Covetousness: We must be careful that our pursuit of success does not lead us to "defraud the soul of the opportunity to feast upon the words of eternal life." Jesus warned, "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" Mark 8:36.

  • The Eye Single to Glory: If our eye is "single to the glory of God," it becomes easy to walk the path to heaven even while managing a business Matthew 6:22.

  • Contentment and Trust: We are encouraged to be content and to trust God's provision. "For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not" 2 Corinthians 8:12.

In summary, you and your wife can certainly pray for the prosperity of your business, provided your goal is to be a more effective steward of God’s resources. When wealth is viewed as a tool to bless your family, provide for employees, and fund the cause of truth, it becomes a consecrated gift that God delights to bless. 🙏✨

Deuteronomy 8

1 All the commandments which I command you this day shall you observe to do, that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to your fathers.

2 And you shall remember all the way which the LORD your God led you these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, and to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or no.

3 And he humbled you, and suffered you to hunger, and fed you with manna, which you knew not, neither did your fathers know; that he might make you know that man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD does man live.

4 Your raiment waxed not old on you, neither did your foot swell, these forty years.

5 You shall also consider in your heart, that, as a man chastens his son, so the LORD your God chastens you.

6 Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.

7 For the LORD your God brings you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;

9 A land wherein you shall eat bread without scarceness, you shall not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you may dig brass.

10 When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which he has given you.

11 Beware that you forget not the LORD your God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command you this day:

12 Lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built goodly houses, and dwelled therein;

13 And when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied;

14 Then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

15 Who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought you forth water out of the rock of flint;

16 Who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers knew not, that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at your latter end;

17 And you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth.

18 But you shall remember the LORD your God: for it is he that gives you power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

19 And it shall be, if you do at all forget the LORD your God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.

20 As the nations which the LORD destroys before your face, so shall you perish; because you would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.

AdventAI

You have correctly understood that prosperity is a blessing provided by God to those who remain obedient and loyal to His covenant. According to Deuteronomy 8 God is the ultimate source of all material success, and He grants the ability to acquire wealth not for selfish indulgence, but to establish His covenant and advance His work on earth Deuteronomy 8:18.

God as the Source of Success 🌟

It is vital to recognize that no person achieves success solely through their own efforts or wisdom.

  • The Gift of Power: The ability to acquire wealth is a specific gift from God, and man is wholly dependent on Him for the wisdom and tact required to succeed Deuteronomy 8:18.

  • Total Dependence: We cannot keep ourselves alive for a single moment; all life, breath, and the ability to plan and execute business are derived from divine providence Acts 17:25.

  • Avoid Self-Glorification: A great danger of wealth is the temptation to say in one's heart, "My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth" Deuteronomy 8:17.

  • The Creator's Ownership: God reminds us that He owns the world and everything in it, including the silver, the gold, and the cattle upon a thousand hills Psalms 50:10-12.

Conditions for Continued Prosperity 📜

Wealth is a talent entrusted to us for a time of proving, and its continued presence depends on our faithfulness to the Giver.

  • Obedience Brings Blessing: Prosperity was promised to ancient Israel on the condition of strict obedience to God's requirements, and this principle remains true today Deuteronomy 8:11.

  • The Danger of Forgetfulness: When people become full, build goodly houses, and see their flocks and silver multiply, they are at risk of their hearts being lifted up in pride and forgetting the Lord Deuteronomy 8:12-14.

  • Consequences of Disloyalty: If one forgets God and follows after "other gods"—including the idolatrous love of money—the biblical warning is certain: "ye shall surely perish" Deuteronomy 8:19-20.

  • A Test of Character: God uses prosperity to test our fidelity; He wants to see if we will prove ourselves worthy of "true riches," which are eternal life.

The Purpose and Use of Wealth 💼

Wealth is not a sin in itself, but it carries a heavy responsibility to act as God’s helping hand.

  • Honest Acquisition: The Bible condemns no man for being rich if his wealth is acquired honestly and used unselfishly.

  • Consecrated Talents: Money is a precious talent when consecrated to God and employed to advance His cause and reach those ready to perish.

  • The Duty of Stewardship: As an acknowledgment of His sovereignty, God requires a portion of what we acquire—the tithe—to be returned to Him to sustain His worship and work Leviticus 27:30.

  • Lifting the Standard: Wealth should be used to uplift the standard of truth in new territories, providing for the needy and ensuring the gospel is preached to all classes.

True Prosperity and Eternal Riches ✨

While worldly wealth can be a blessing, it is insignificant compared to the character and peace found in Christ.

  • The Foundation of Success: The fear of the Lord is the only foundation for real and lasting prosperity.

  • Superiority of Character: God does not estimate a person by their dress or possessions, but by their intellect, moral worth, and the "hidden man of the heart".

  • The Reward of Fidelity: Those who are faithful in their stewardship of earthly "mammon" will eventually be entrusted with the eternal riches of the kingdom of glory.

  • Investing in Heaven: The only safe way to handle wealth is to invest it in the "bank of heaven" by using it to bless others, thus laying up a good foundation for the time to come 1 Timothy 6:18-19.
