Bipolar Disorder as a Thorn in the Flesh
Can bipolar disorder actually deepen your dependence on God?
Can bipolar disorder be a thorn in the flesh

Bipolar disorder, or any form of mental infirmity, can certainly be viewed as a "thorn in the flesh" that allows an individual to feel their dependence on God and walk humbly before Him. Just as the Apostle Paul was given a thorn in the flesh to prevent him from becoming exalted by the abundance of his revelations, various afflictions are sometimes permitted to ensure we remain in a state of strict watchfulness and fervent prayer 2 Corinthians 12:7.
The Purpose of Affliction 🌟
Encouraging Humility: God may design specific afflictions for your good to remove traits that are detrimental to your character or a weight to those around you.
Refining Character: The furnace of affliction is often necessary to keep those who have received great spiritual blessings from becoming self-righteous or puffed up.
Spiritual Strength: Even when a "thorn" is not removed after earnest prayer, the grace of Christ remains sufficient to sustain the believer, allowing His power to be made perfect in weakness 2 Corinthians 12:8-9.
The Connection Between Mental and Physical Health 🧠
Holistic Health: Mental disorders can sometimes be aggravated by physical conditions, such as digestive issues or a lack of physical exercise, which creates an unbalanced circulation of blood to the brain.
Mental Depression: Deep sadness can deaden the circulation in the nerves and blood vessels, which in turn hinders digestion and aggravates existing mental disorders.
Restoration: Following the laws of health and temperance is a primary means of rescuing individuals from physical, mental, and moral degeneracy.
Finding Peace in Christ 🕊️
Divine Medicine: The influence of the Spirit of God is the very best medicine for disease, as "Heaven is all health" and provides a well-spring of happiness.
True Courtesy: The health of the body depends more upon heart-healthfulness than many suppose, and cultivating a contented, Christlike disposition helps in the Christian life.
Ultimate Healing: The peace of Christ brings life and health, and the sense of sins forgiven can spread sunshine through the soul and lighten the heart.
While suffering in this world, we must remember that the Lord is good to all and His tender mercies are over all His works Psalms 145:9. Whether the Lord chooses to remove the affliction or provide the grace to endure it, our first duty is self-development and the preservation of every faculty to its highest degree for His glory.
