Gather 'round, precious little lambs, and let us open God's Word together to hear a beautiful story! 🙏 Today, we are going to learn about a very special meal that Jesus shared with His disciples, and what it means for us today. It's called the Lord's Supper, or Communion. ✨

The Last Supper with Jesus

Imagine Jesus and His twelve disciples, gathered together in an upper room for a special meal. This wasn't just any meal; it was the Passover supper, a time when Jewish families remembered how God had rescued their ancestors from slavery in Egypt many, many years ago. They would eat unleavened bread and drink wine, remembering God's great deliverance.

On this particular night, Jesus knew that something amazing and sad was about to happen. He was going to give His life to save us all from sin! So, He wanted to share some very important lessons with His friends.

As they were eating, Jesus took some bread. He gave thanks to God for it, and then He broke it into pieces. He gave it to His disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of Me." - Luke 22:19.

Isn't that wonderful? Jesus was showing them that His body would be broken on the cross for them, and for us! When we eat the bread in the Lord's Supper, we remember that Jesus gave His body to save us.

Then, after they had finished eating, Jesus took a cup of wine. He gave thanks again, and He gave it to His disciples, saying, "This cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you." - Luke 22:20. He was talking about His precious blood that would be shed on the cross to make a new covenant, or promise, with God's people. Just as the blood on the doorposts in Egypt saved God's people from death, Christ's blood saves us from sin and gives us eternal life! "For this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." - Matthew 26:28.

What Does This Mean for Us?

So, when we share in the Lord's Supper, we are doing a few very important things:

  1. We Remember Jesus' Great Sacrifice: The bread reminds us of His body broken for us, and the "fruit of the vine" (the Bible's term for the juice in the cup) reminds us of His blood shed for the forgiveness of our sins. "For as often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you do show the Lord’s death till He come." - 1 Corinthians 11:26. It's a way to keep His love and sacrifice fresh in our hearts.

  2. We Show Our Faith in Him: By taking part, we are saying, "Yes, Jesus, I believe You died for me! I accept Your wonderful gift of salvation!" It's a public way to declare our personal acceptance of Jesus as our Savior.

  3. We Look Forward to His Coming: Jesus also said that He would not drink of the fruit of the vine again "until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom." - Matthew 26:29. This means the Lord's Supper also reminds us that Jesus is coming back one day, and we will share a glorious feast with Him in heaven! "Blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb." - Revelation 19:9.

The Lord's Supper is a simple, beautiful service that helps us remember Jesus' incredible love and sacrifice for us. It's a time to feel close to Him, to thank Him for giving His life, and to look forward to the day when we will see Him face to face! ❤️
