Conquering Fear: Slavish Bondage vs. Holy Reverence
Is your fear a paralyzing poison or the beginning of true wisdom?
Can you include what fear is and how it affects our spiritual lives and our relationship with God. Differentiate with negative fear to the fear of God. Show a contrast in the introduction

It would be my pleasure to refine this sermon and outline for you, weaving in the essential distinction between the paralyzing spirit of fear and the holy, life-giving fear of God. I will ensure these additions are integrated seamlessly into your message to help your congregation understand how to walk in faith rather than bondage.

The Spirit of Power and the Heavenly Manna: Conquering Fear Through Faith 🕊️
Introduction: A Tale of Two Spirits ⚖️
In the journey of the Christian life, we find ourselves standing between two opposing forces: a spirit of slavish fear and the holy fear of the Lord. Slavish fear is a child of sin and guilt, a potent weapon used by the enemy to weaken the soul and dissipate peace. It has "torment" in it, undermining the foundations of faith and making the experience of the saint tame and spiritless. In contrast, the "fear of God" is a filial, child-like reverence founded in love and perfected in peace. This godly fear is not a hindrance but is actually the "beginning of wisdom," serving as the foundation of true greatness. While slavish fear scares the soul with groundless alarms, godly fear stimulates the action of faith as it soars upward to heaven. God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind 2 Timothy 1:7.
A Story for the Children: The Bread That Could Not Be Hoarded 🍞
Children, imagine you were traveling in a giant desert with no gardens or grocery stores. The people of Israel were there, and they began to feel that slavish, scary fear that they would starve. But God told them He would rain "bread from heaven" for them every single morning. He gave them a very special rule: they were only to gather enough for one day at a time.
Some people were still afraid and tried to save extra manna under their beds for the next day, but in the morning, it was full of worms and smelled terrible! God was teaching them that they didn't need to be "policy men" or worry about tomorrow. He wanted them to have a "teachable spirit" and trust Him every morning. By giving them manna daily, He showed them that they were safe in His hands and that they should only fear offending a God who was so good and kind to them.
The Anatomy of Fear: How It Erodes the Soul 📉
When we allow the spirit of slavish fear to control us, it works like a "deadly poison" to our spiritual life.
Weakens the Connection: Unless we have a living connection with God, we cannot do our work with heavenly wisdom.
Blinds the Perception: Worldly associations and the fear of what others think can "dazzle the senses" so that piety and faithfulness lose their power to keep us steadfast.
Perverts Judgment: When we are not controlled by the fear of God, but by the fear of loss or the opinions of men, we develop "objectionable traits of character" and "unrestrained jealousy".
Hinders Success: Those who move in their own wisdom, apart from the fear of the Lord, will find no true prosperity.
If we choose a business or a path where we cannot "perfect holiness in the fear of God," we are heading toward spiritual shipwreck.
The Manna Principle: Daily Sustenance and Future Planning 🌨️
The prayer of Jesus, "Give us this day our daily bread," is the antidote to the "bread of sorrows" mentioned in the Psalms Matthew 6:11Psalms 127:2.
Trusting the Present: We are to live with an "habitual sense of His presence," trusting that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. Like the manna, His grace is fresh every morning.
Planning with a Sound Mind: Trusting God does not mean we are idle. The Israelites had to gather a double portion on the sixth day to prepare for the Sabbath. This was not "slavish fear," but "filial fear" which respects God's rules of right.
The Blueprint of Success: Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it Psalms 127:1. We must move "discreetly" and "plan wisely," but always in the fear of God, recognizing He is the real Proprietor.
A Solid Foundation: Daniel and his companions chose the "simple practices" of their youth, making the fear of God the "foundation of their greatness".
The Cross: The Cure for a Fearful Heart ✝️
The only way to transition from slavish fear to the spirit of power and love is to look at the Cross of Calvary. The penitent thief on the cross found that when the "fear of God" crept over his soul, it became the beginning of spiritual life. He saw that Jesus had "done nothing amiss," and this moral decision opened his mind to the light of heaven.
We must realize the value Christ sets upon us; we are the "purchase of His blood". When we understand the infinite sacrifice made for us, slavish fear is "cast out" by a love that rests in Him. We no longer serve out of a "spirit of bondage," but out of the "spirit of adoption".
The Final Appeal: What Are You Going to Do? 📢
The time has come when every soul must act for themselves. Satan is fast obtaining control of minds that do not have the fear of God before them. A "time of trouble" is approaching, and our only safety is in a "living connection with God" Daniel 12:1.
The Call to Decision:
Choose Your Association: Shun the company of those who have no fear of God, for they will corrupt your character.
Cleanse the Temple: Let us "cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God" 2 Corinthians 7:1.
Trust the Builder: Stop eating the "bread of sorrows" through groundless alarms Psalms 127:2. Trust that the Lord who fed the Israelites with manna is jealous for His honor and will care for you.
What are you going to do? Will you continue in the "slavish fear" that has torment, or will you enter into the "holy awe" and "sacred joy" of those who walk with Christ? Yield your will to Him this hour, and move forward in the fear of God, for He is your strength and your shield.
Amen.
