Why We Bear the Consequences of Original Sin

Are you held guilty for a sin committed at the dawn of time?

Why do we have to bear the consequence of Adam and Eve’s sin

AdventAI

We bear the consequences of Adam and Eve’s sin because their transgression introduced mortality, a corrupted nature, and a cursed environment to the entire human race Genesis 3:17-19.

The Entrance of Death and Mortality

When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they were excluded from the tree of life, which was the only means of sustaining their existence forever Genesis 3:22-24. Because they lost access to this life-giving fruit, they became subject to literal, physical death. As the natural head of the human family, Adam’s mortality was passed on to all his descendants; therefore, we die because we are born mortal, not as a penal punishment for his specific act Romans 5:12. This "first death" is an inevitable consequence that visits every person regardless of their individual character.

Transmission of Tendencies and Environment

The fall did not just affect the length of human life, but also the very nature of humanity and the world we inhabit:

  • Physical Degeneracy: Our bodies have become stunted and subject to a vast array of diseases and infirmities that were never part of God's original plan.

  • Transmitted Tendencies: Just as physical traits are passed down, the tendencies toward self-gratification and disobedience are transmitted to offspring.

  • A Cursed Earth: The very atmosphere and ground were marred, resulting in extremes of heat and cold, as well as the growth of thorns and thistles Genesis 3:17-18.

  • The Power of Satan: By choosing to listen to the tempter, man allowed the world to become a "treasure house of evil" under Satan’s influence.

Our Personal Responsibility vs. Adamic Consequences

It is vital to understand that while we suffer the results of the fall, we are not held guilty for Adam’s personal sin.

  • Innocence of Infants: Children are counted innocent by God until they reach an age of understanding; the idea that infants are born deserving of God's wrath is a misconception.

  • The Second Death: While the first death comes to us because of Adam, the "second death"—final destruction—is only the penalty for our own personal, willful transgressions Revelation 20:14-15.

  • A Second Probation: Because it would be unjust for our ultimate fate to be decided by a transaction in which we did not participate, the plan of salvation provides a resurrection for all men. This ensures that every individual has their own period of probation to choose life or death on their own merits Deuteronomy 30:19.

Restoration Through Christ

God did not leave us in this helpless state, but provided a way of escape through the second Adam, Jesus Christ 1 Corinthians 15:22. By His perfect obedience and sacrifice, He redeemed what was lost and makes it possible for us to overcome our natural defects through His grace. Eventually, those who choose to follow Him will be restored to the original proportions of the race and will once again have the right to the tree of life in a world where the curse of sin is forever removed Revelation 22:14.
