You can encourage a deep and constant sense of Jesus' presence in your life by maintaining an active, living connection with Him through utter dependence, diligent prayer, and unreserved surrender to His service. This union with Christ is essential, as only through abiding in Him can we reveal His light and life in our actions.
We are not left alone, for Christ has given the assurance of His abiding presence, stating, "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world" Matthew 28:20. It is unwavering faith in this living Presence that imparts spiritual power.
1. Establishing and Maintaining Union with Christ
To cherish the presence of Jesus, you must establish and safeguard your union with Him daily:
Choose Christ Fully: The true believer chooses Christ as first and last, and best in everything. Every individual must choose Christ for themselves, because He has first chosen us, paying an infinite price for our redemption.
Embrace Dependence and Change: This vital union requires a deep sense of need for the atoning blood of Christ and a submission of your own will to God's will. It is a relationship of utter dependence, requiring a painful work of detachment from cherished idols such as pride, selfishness, and worldliness.
Cleansing the Soul Temple: When true conversion takes place, the soul temple is cleansed from moral defilement and made ready for Christ’s indwelling. When self is broken upon the Rock, the Lord has the opportunity to remodel the character, and heavenly peace sanctifies the spirit.
Abiding in Christ: Abiding in Christ signifies constantly receiving His Spirit and living a life of unreserved surrender to His service. You are to live in Him in the same way you first received Him—by believing that, for Christ’s sake, He takes away your sins and changes your heart.
2. Cultivating Presence through Prayer and the Word
Communion with God is vital, as Jesus Himself found joy and comfort in prayer when His human nature was upon Him.
Practice Constant Prayer: Secret prayer is the strength of the Christian; you cannot live and flourish without constant watchfulness and earnest prayer. You should encourage His presence by a life of prayer, recognizing that prayer and faith together can achieve what no earthly power can accomplish.
Commune with Him Daily: We have the privilege of speaking to our Maker and uttering words that reach the throne of the Monarch of the universe. As you walk through your day, you may speak with Jesus, realizing that He is at your right hand Psalms 16:8.
Assimilate His Word: To eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God means to study the Word and carry that Word into the life in obedience to all its precepts. You are to receive and assimilate His words until they become part of yourselves. His gracious presence in His word speaks to the soul, representing Him as the well of living water to refresh the thirsty soul.
Cherish Stillness: Let your soul be hushed in silent awe, that the unseen Presence may be appreciated and the still, small voice of the Spirit may be heard.
3. Manifesting the Presence in Daily Life
When the heart is open continually to an indwelling Saviour, His character will be reflected in your actions and words.
Walk in Obedience: The kingdom of God is enthroned in your heart by Christ’s presence abiding there. The working of the grace of Christ controls the temper and voice, resulting in love, politeness, kindness, gentleness, and forbearance.
Serve Others Personally: If you are in communion with Christ, you will place His estimate upon every human being and feel the deep love that Christ felt for you. You can reach the hearts of people through personal work and manifested interest, as Jesus did in His ministry.
Witness Through Character: When you abide in the True Vine, you will bear testimony to the whole world through your words and actions. Those who are partakers of the divine nature will naturally aid the needy and minister to their wants, just as Christ went about doing good.
Glorify God through Fruit: It is impossible to be a disciple of Christ and remain a fruitless branch; the Father is glorified when you bear much fruit John 15:8. When Christ is abiding in the soul, purity, love, meekness, and truth shine forth in the character.
The Transforming Result of His Presence
The result of receiving Christ is a profound transformation that brings lasting peace and joy:
Internal Peace and Joy: Spiritual joy is the result of a consciousness of Christ’s saving presence. When the Lord Jesus abides in the heart, there is peace with God, and the joy of heaven is an abiding presence. If you abide in Jesus, you will be happy, cheerful, and joyful in God.
Divine Power: An indwelling Christ is the cause of ever-increasing power and is the life-blood of the soul. When you have an indwelling Saviour, you will be found doing as Christ did and will not rust through inaction.
Transformation: Christ abiding in the soul exerts a transforming power, changing the very expression of the countenance, which then bears witness to the peace and joy that reign within. You will be able to say, "I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me" Galatians 2:20.
