Happy Sunday! I am so glad to study today's lesson with you as we look at the incredible life and prayer habits of the prophet Daniel 📖. Today, May 3, we focus on what it means to be a "Faithful Daniel" and how his abiding connection with Heaven made him a pillar of strength in a foreign land.
Daniel's Purpose and Divine Wisdom
Daniel’s success began with a firm decision in his youth to remain loyal to God's requirements. He purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s meat or wine, choosing a path of temperance and obedience Daniel 1:8. Because of this faithfulness, God granted Daniel and his three friends knowledge and skill in all learning, and Daniel specifically received understanding in visions and dreams Daniel 1:17. When the king eventually examined them, he found them ten times better in wisdom and understanding than all the wise men in his entire realm Daniel 1:20. This intellectual superiority was a direct result of his plain diet combined with a consistent life of prayer.
Prayer in Times of Crisis
Daniel did not just pray when things were easy; he made prayer his first resort in every emergency. When King Nebuchadnezzar issued a decree to slay all the wise men of Babylon, Daniel didn't panic; instead, he gathered his companions to seek mercies from the God of heaven regarding the secret dream Daniel 2:14-18. After God revealed the secret in a night vision, Daniel immediately offered a prayer of thanksgiving, acknowledging that wisdom and might belong solely to God Daniel 2:19-23. He realized that God is the one who removes kings and sets up kings, and he did not take the credit for himself Daniel 2:21.
Unswerving Integrity and Constant Communion
Daniel’s life was marked by what the Bible calls an "excellent spirit," which even his heathen superiors recognized as being from the Holy Spirit Daniel 5:14Daniel 6:3. His integrity was so unbending that even his jealous enemies could find no error or fault in his work Daniel 6:4. They realized the only way to trap him was concerning the law of his God Daniel 6:5. Even when he knew the decree was signed that would throw him into a den of lions for praying, Daniel didn't change his habits Daniel 6:10. He went into his house, kept his windows open toward Jerusalem, and kneeled upon his knees three times a day to pray and give thanks Daniel 6:10Daniel 9:23.
Lessons for Our Prayer Life
The story of Daniel challenges us to look at our own prayer lives and see how often we allow minor obstacles to stop us from seeking God.
Consistency: Daniel’s prayer life was so predictable that his enemies knew exactly where to find him Daniel 6:11.
Posture: He showed his dependence on the Sovereign of the universe by bowing on his knees.
Priority: He valued communion with God more than his own life or the favor of a king Daniel 6:10.
Faith: He believed God’s word implicitly and lived as though the efficiency and praise were all due to God.
If Daniel could maintain his integrity and prayer life while serving in a pagan court and facing a death decree, we are left without excuse for neglecting our privilege of speaking with our Maker. Daniel was "greatly beloved" by Heaven because he chose to make prayer and effort the business of his life Daniel 10:11.
How does Daniel's example of praying three times a day encourage you in your own daily routine 🙏? If you'd like, we can look at the specific arguments Daniel used in his prayers or discuss how to overcome the common excuses we face today! 😇
