Unmasking Spiritual Deception: How the Devil Counterfeits Formation

Can your spiritual practices be a subtle form of deception?

AdventAI

How does the devil use spiritual formation for bad?

AdventAI

The devil uses spiritual formation to lead souls away from Christ by introducing subtle deceptions, false doctrines, and hypnotic influences that appear as light but eventually bring the mind under the control of satanic agencies. This work is designed to replace the attributes of God with those of the enemy, leading to spiritual darkness and the ruin of character.

The Use of Counterfeit Light and Personalities

One of the most dangerous ways the enemy works is by transforming himself into an "angel of light" to present pleasing fables and fallacious theories. He often works through human leaders who may have once had great light but have refused to follow divine admonitions, eventually allowing another spirit to take possession of their minds.

  • Hypnotic Influence: Satanic agencies use a "baneful mesmeric influence" or hypnotic power to win the confidence of the unsuspecting, who mistakenly attribute this power to the Spirit of the Lord.

  • Dividing the Church: He encourages an independent spirit that leads individuals to trust their own judgment over the collective counsel of those God has appointed for leadership.

  • Sowing Doubt: Through those in responsible positions, he sows seeds of doubt and unbelief—referred to as "tares"—to counteract the work of divine agencies.

Spiritualism and the Deception of the Dead

Spiritualism is a primary tool used to capture the world by building on the false doctrine of consciousness after death. The devil personifies departed friends and relatives to bring unscriptural doctrines, such as the idea that the Sabbath has been changed.

  • Lying Wonders: Satanic power will eventually reach a climax where "lying wonders" and miracles are performed to deceive, if possible, the very elect Matthew 24:24.

  • Rules for Spirits: Books on divination and spiritism are actually regulations for the worship of Satan and should be entirely destroyed to avoid temptation.

The Misuse of Christian Forms and Education

The enemy is particularly active within religious and educational institutions, seeking to demoralize them through students and teachers who lack moral integrity.

  • Form without Power: Many maintain the outward forms of religion, such as chanting psalms or taking part in services, while their hearts are unconvertedly following worldly pleasures and satanic habits.

  • Perverted Judgment: By indulging appetite and selfish desires, men lose control of themselves, and their judgment becomes so perverted that they remain indifferent to the woe and crime around them.

  • Cruelty and Hatred: A disposition to cause pain to others or to animals is a direct manifestation of a satanic spirit. This same spirit leads to hatred toward parents or a lack of sympathy for others.

The Safeguard against Delusion

To resist these influences, it is essential to have a personal connection with Christ and a thorough understanding of the Scriptures.

  • Trust in the Word: The Bible is the only weapon that can successfully shield the soul from delusive arts.

  • Obedience to the Law: Our safeguard from satanic delusion is found in keeping the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

  • Wrestling in Prayer: The spell of satanic agency can be broken through earnest wrestling with God in prayer and the support of brethren who have a living connection with Him.

  • Stillness before God: Amidst the confusion of life, we must listen for the voice of God in the "silence of the soul" to obtain true rest and preparation for service Psalms 46:10.

While the forces of evil are combining for the last great crisis, the eye of faith can discern that Christ has all power in heaven and earth, and He will bring His people through to victory. Everyone must choose whose banner they will stand under: the blood-stained banner of Prince Emmanuel or the black banner of the powers of darkness.
