The Health Message: A Divine Blueprint for Living

Is your physical health the 'right arm' of your spiritual life?

What is the health message?

AdventAI

The health message is a divine gift of light designed to keep the mind and body in the best condition for service and to prepare a people for the second coming of Christ. It is an essential part of the third angel's message, acting as the "right arm" to the body by breaking down prejudice and opening doors for the gospel.

The Core Purpose of the Message

  • Preparation for Translation: The primary goal of health reform is to fit God's people for translation and to enable them to stand through the trials of the last days.

  • Optimal Service: By practicing temperance in eating and drinking, believers maintain a sacred relationship with God and keep their mental faculties clear for His work.

  • Restoration: It is part of the last great effort to proclaim the gospel, aiming to restore the moral image of God in man.

Principles of Diet and Living

  • Progressive Reform: Dietetic reform should be a gradual, progressive process where unwholesome items are discarded step-by-step.

  • A Natural Diet: The food God gave Adam in his sinless state—grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables—is the best for man’s use.

  • Safety and Animal Disease: Because disease in animals is increasing, the use of meat, butter, cheese, and eventually eggs and milk will become increasingly unsafe.

  • Simplicity and Economy: The Lord provides knowledge to prepare wholesome, palatable food that is inexpensive and simple, ensuring that even the poor are not left with an impoverished diet.

  • Physical Hygiene: The message includes an appeal for cleanliness in dress and person, as those expecting immortality should be clean and tidy 2 Corinthians 6:16.

The Role of Medical Missionary Work

  • The Gospel in Practice: While the ministry of the Word is the gospel preached, medical missionary work is the gospel practiced.

  • Pioneer Agency: This work acts as a pioneer agency to reach people in great cities and new places where other methods might not find entrance.

  • United Ministry: Physicians, ministers, nurses, and laypeople are called to work in perfect harmony, as the hand is joined to the body, to minister to both soul and physical needs.

Caution Against Extremes

  • Avoid Radicalism: Reformers must be careful not to go to extremes or prepare tasteless, "insipid" food that the stomach refuses.

  • Meeting People Where They Are: In sanitariums and public teaching, we must not place a "strait-jacket" on the appetite suddenly but should provide an abundance of good, appetizing food to lead people toward better habits.

  • Proper Balance: While prominent, the health message must never take the place of the third angel's message itself.

Personal Responsibility

  • Example and Precept: Those who advocate reform must exemplify its principles on their own tables to commend the truth to others.

  • Sanctified Will: The passions are to be controlled by the will, and the reason is to be sanctified by divine grace Matthew 4:1-4.

  • Constant Progress: We are living in solemn times and must arouse to make greater progress in reforming our habits of eating, dressing, and laboring Revelation 12:17.
