Ellen G. White on Unity: A Divine Principle for God's Work
What is the foundation of unity according to Ellen G. White?

Unity is a central theme in the teachings of Ellen G. White, emphasized as essential for the success of God's work and the spiritual well-being of His people. It is portrayed as a divine principle, reflecting the unity between the Father and the Son, and a crucial testimony to the world of Christ's mission and power.
Understanding Unity
Unity, as presented, does not imply uniformity in every aspect, but rather a "unity in diversity." Our minds and work may differ, but humble hearts, meekness, and lowliness, learned in the school of Christ, allow us to press together in the narrow path. This diversity is part of God's design, where various gifts and talents are harmoniously woven together to perfect the overall plan, much like different colored threads in a carpet create a beautiful pattern. Each part is distinct yet works in harmony, dependent on one another to make a perfect whole.
The Foundation of Unity
The foundation of unity is rooted in our relationship with Christ:
Unity with Christ: Becoming "one with Christ" is the only hope of reaching heaven. This union with Christ establishes a bond of unity with one another.
Spirit of Christ: Nothing can perfect unity in the church but the spirit of Christlike forbearance. The Spirit of Christ never leads to separation into independent parties; rather, it cultivates brotherly love and tenderness.
Obedience to Truth: Obedience to the truth is essential for sanctification and unity. As Jesus prayed for His followers to be one, He also prayed, "Sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth" John 17:17. Bible truth, believed and practiced, reveals the oneness between the Father and the Son.
Holy Spirit: The endowment of the Holy Spirit brings unity in voice and understanding. Through the Holy Spirit, unity may be attained, and love for the brethren will abound.
Manifestations of Unity
Unity is manifested in various ways within the church and among believers:
Love for One Another: This is the most convincing proof to the world of Christ's majesty and virtue. Christ's new commandment is "That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another" John 13:34-35.
Unity of Action: God's work advances rapidly only when workers labor in unity. This unity of action requires submission of individual judgment and ideas to preserve harmony. When Christ's prayer is fully believed and practiced, unity of action will be seen, binding brethren together by the golden bonds of Christ's love.
Unity of Purpose: Laborers, with unity of purpose, are to devote heart, mind, and strength to the holy work. This is crucial for carrying forward the work successfully.
Unity in Doctrine and Faith: The gifts of the Spirit were given "for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come in the unity of the faith" Ephesians 4:12-13. Those who observe the Bible Sabbath are united in their views of Bible truth.
Harmony in Home and Church: Unity in the home and church reveals Christ's manner and grace more than sermons and arguments.
Suppression of Self: Love of self, pride, and self-sufficiency are at the foundation of discord. We must "press together, press together, be of one mind, of one judgment". Self-restraint is essential to answer Christ's prayer for unity.
Obstacles to Unity
Satan actively works to create dissension and divide believers:
Discord and Strife: The enemy of souls delights in seeing people work at cross purposes. He instigates jealousy, evil surmising, and evilspeaking to produce discord.
False Doctrine and Extremism: False doctrine brings unconverted hearts into the church and hinders the unity Christ prayed for. Extremists can prevent the influence of truth from reaching people by magnifying minor matters into tests of Christian fellowship.
Individual Independence and Self-Exaltation: While individuality is preserved, unsanctified independence hinders God's presence and blessing. No man should act as mind and judgment for another, nor lay down arbitrary man-made rules.
Worldly Alliances: Forming worldly alliances, especially in marriage, can close the history of one's religious experience and usefulness, as it creates a steady influence in the opposite direction of faith and unity.
The Call to Unity
God calls His people to actively strive for and maintain unity:
Earnest Prayer: Jesus did not pray for an unattainable unity, and His followers should earnestly strive for this condition of grace. We need to study carefully and prayerfully the prayer of Christ for His disciples.
Mutual Forbearance and Love: This is crucial for holding people in the bonds of Christian unity. Christians should regard it as a religious duty to repress envy and emulation and rejoice in the prosperity of their brethren.
Confession and Reconciliation: The Holy Spirit is given to purify the church of annoyances and to settle grievances. Confessions should be made until the church is relieved of sin.
Cooperation with Heaven: Heavenly intelligences are waiting to cooperate with human instrumentalities to reveal what can be accomplished through unity with the Divine.
In essence, unity is a divine requirement and a powerful witness. It's a journey of continuous effort, guided by the Holy Spirit, to reflect the love and harmony that exists between the Father and the Son, thereby fulfilling Christ's earnest prayer for His followers.
