Ellen White on the Necessity of Greek and Hebrew
Is a mastery of Greek and Hebrew necessary to preach the gospel?
Does Ellen white say learning Greek and Hebrew aren't necessary to learn?

While learning Greek and Latin is necessary for certain specific callings and practical uses, it is not essential for the vast majority of people and should never take precedence over practical or spiritual education. The study of these dead languages can often be a snare, as it frequently involves pagan or infidel literature that corrupts the mind and fosters pride.
The Proper Place of Language Study
A Selective Need: There are times when Greek and Latin scholars are needed, but only a few should devote themselves to these studies.
Secondary Importance: The study of dead languages must be secondary to subjects that teach the right use of the body and mind, as well as practical duties.
Foundation First: It is wrong to neglect foundational subjects like voice culture, reading, writing, and spelling to tax the mind with Latin and Greek.
Essential Knowledge: Knowing one's own physical structure through physiology and hygiene is of far greater value than drilling in Greek or Latin.
Spiritual and Practical Risks
Corrupting Influences: Much of the literature used to master these languages is pagan or infidel in nature, molding character with evil sentiments and leading to vice.
Intellectual Pride: Students who focus on these branches often develop self-esteem and a prideful spirit, which can spoil them for the service of God.
The Gospel is Simple: Jesus did not deem this type of education essential for His disciples; instead, He gave them sacred truth to share in its simplicity.
Higher Education: True higher education bears the similitude of heaven and makes one Christlike; it does not depend on a knowledge of Greek or Latin.
The Sufficiency of the Great Teacher
Men do not need to spend years studying Greek, Latin, or Hebrew before they are qualified to preach the gospel. If a person is learning from Christ, the Great Teacher, they can be effective workers for God even without these languages. Spirituality and a knowledge of God's Word are of infinitely greater consequence than the mastery of any dead language.
As it is written, the preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who perish, but to those being saved, it is the power of God 1 Corinthians 1:18. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him Romans 10:12. Furthermore, in the new man renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him, there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all Colossians 3:10-11.
