Ellen White and N.T. Wright on Restoring Human Stewardship
Is salvation an escape from earth or a restoration of our role in it?
What does Ellen White have to say similar to the following from N.T. Wright: He did not want to rescue humans from creation any more than he wanted to rescue Israel from the Gentiles. He wanted to rescue Israel in order that Israel might be a light to the Gentiles, and he wanted thereby to rescue humans in order that humans might be his rescuing stewards over creation. That is the inner dynamic of the kingdom of God. To snatch saved souls away to a disembodied heaven would destroy the whole point. God is to become king of the whole world at last. And he will do this not by declaring that the inner dynamic of creation (that it be ruled by humans) was a mistake, nor by declaring that the inner dynamic of his covenant (that Israel would be the means of saving the nations) was a failure, but rather by fulfilling them both.
AdventAI
The divine plan for salvation is not to remove humanity from the world, but to restore them to their appointed role as stewards under God's kingdom, fulfilling His purpose through both Israel and the human race. God’s design has always been to work through human channels to manifest His glory and power to the entire universe.
The Purpose of Israel as a Light
God chose Israel and gave them every facility to become the greatest nation on earth, not for their own exaltation, but to be a kingdom of priests that would reveal His majesty to all nations.
A Light to the World: Christ worked untiringly for Israel to lead them to trust Him so they could reflect His light to every man who comes into the world John 1:12.
Fulfilling the Covenant: Although many in Israel failed, the casting away of some resulted in the riches of the Gentiles, and God continues to call for the message of mercy to be given to the world so that the "fulness" of His plan may be realized Romans 11:12.
Mission to All Peoples: The middle wall of partition is broken down, and the saving truth is now to reach every nation, tongue, and people through the ministry of God's stewards.
Restoration to Stewardship
Redemption is not merely about escaping the earth; it is about the restoration of fallen man to his original position of cooperation with God.
Laborers Together with God: We are called to be God’s husbandry and building, using our talents and means to advance His kingdom on earth 1 Corinthians 3:9.
The Practical Kingdom: The kingdom of God is made manifest through practical benevolence, such as medical missionary work, which is the gospel in practice Matthew 25:34-40.
Entrusted Talents: Humans are viewed as trustees of God’s goods, tasked with using their influence, intellect, and wealth to turn others from error to righteousness.
Fulfilling Creation and Covenant
God's ultimate goal is the restitution of all things, where the original design for creation is finally realized in a world made new Acts 3:21.
The Earthly Scene of Victory: This world, though seared by the curse, was the specific scene of Christ's incarnation and sacrifice, and it is here that God's character is justified before the universe.
The Final Triumph: The work of atonement concludes not with the destruction of the human role, but with a ransomed people safely gathered into the "heavenly Canaan," forever delivered from the bondage of the curse Romans 8:21-22.
Fulfilling the Law: Christ did not come to lessen the holy law of God but to enable humans to live it out with a sanctified heart, proving that God's requirements are just and possible Matthew 5:17-18.
The Renewed Earthly Reign
The "inner dynamic" of the kingdom concludes with God reigning over a restored creation where His servants see His face and serve Him Revelation 22:3-5.
Restored Dominion: Those who are faithful will be recognized as children of the heavenly King and will reign for ever and ever in a world where there is no more night Revelation 22:5.
Victory Over Rebellion: Every soul that develops a righteous character stands as a testimony to the falsehood of Satan’s charges, proving that God’s plan for human stewardship was never a mistake.
