Ellen White: Prophet, Messenger, or Both?
Was Ellen White just a messenger, or a prophet of God?
Ellen White didn't self proclaim that she was a prophet however some followers like to call her a prophet. Can you explain the reasoning here and weather or not she was just a messenger of God or that she was just receiving messages from God. Is there biblical proof that others could just receive messages from God, not as the same as a prophet and is there truth in the bible that others could posses such gifts post biblical times. Or is this something we should be weary of and careful believing.

It is understood that Ellen G. White was indeed a prophet, as well as a messenger of God, and her ministry is seen as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy, particularly regarding the remnant church in the last days. She herself identified as a messenger, stating her work was to convey what God revealed to her.
Here's a breakdown of the reasoning and biblical support:
🌟 Ellen White as a Prophet and Messenger of God
Ellen White firmly believed that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is the remnant church described in Revelation 12:17 and that God graciously gave this church a special gift—the gift of prophecy—as manifested in her life and work. She wrote extensively, with her messages providing comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction to the church. Many people who were convinced by Scripture that they were living near the close of Earth's history came to believe that she was an agent through whom God spoke by the Spirit of Prophecy to His remnant church.
Her work involved receiving revelations from God, which she faithfully endeavored to write down for the instruction of the church. She emphasized that her insights came directly from God, stating, "My work... bears the stamp of God". She specifically clarified that she was "just as dependent upon the Spirit of the Lord in relating or writing a vision as in having the vision". This intimate connection with the divine source of her messages underscores her role as more than just someone receiving messages; she was a prophetic messenger.
📜 Biblical Proof of Prophetic Gifts Beyond the Biblical Canon
The Bible clearly indicates that the gift of prophecy is not limited to any one age and would continue into the Christian era, particularly in the "last days".
Manifestation in the Old Testament: From early inspired records, we find instances of the prophetic gift, such as Enoch, the seventh from Adam, who was a prophet and saw the coming of the Lord and final judgments Jude 14-15. Daniel also received the spirit of prophetic power, understanding mysteries of the future. Moses and Miriam were also endowed with the prophetic gift Numbers 12:2.
Prophecy for the Last Days: The prophet Joel foretold a future outpouring of the Holy Spirit on "all flesh," where "your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions" Joel 2:28-32. Peter reiterated this prophecy, stating it would come to pass in the "last days" Acts 2:17-18. This strongly suggests that prophetic manifestations, including visions and dreams, would be a characteristic sign of the end times.
The "Testimony of Jesus" as the "Spirit of Prophecy": Revelation 12:17 speaks of the "remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." Revelation 19:10 then clarifies, "For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." This connection is understood to mean that the remnant church would be distinguished by obedience to God's law and the presence of the prophetic gift.
Spiritual Gifts for the Church: Paul's writings in 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 list prophecy as one of the spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit "for the perfecting of the saints" and "the edifying of the body of Christ" Ephesians 4:9-13. These gifts are not meant to cease until the church reaches unity in faith. The Christian age commenced with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and various spiritual gifts, including prophecy, and there is no biblical intimation that these gifts should cease until Christ's second coming.
🤔 Discernment and Caution
While recognizing the continuation of spiritual gifts, it is also essential to exercise discernment.
Testing Prophecies: True prophesying must align with God's Word. For instance, Jesus warned against false prophets and provided tests for discerning them, such as knowing them "by their fruits" Matthew 7:15-20. This implies that not all claims of divine revelation are genuine.
The Bible as the Standard: The Bible is the supreme standard by which all teaching and experience, including prophetic utterances, must be tested. The Holy Spirit, as the author of both the Scriptures and the Spirit of Prophecy, ensures that they are in harmony.
Avoiding Fanaticism and False Claims: Ellen White herself warned against "false dreams, as well as false visions, which are inspired by the spirit of Satan". She also cautioned against people imagining they have special light when they have not, emphasizing that this is "one of Satan's masterpieces of deception". She explicitly stated that not every word she spoke or wrote was inspired like the Ten Commandments, particularly concerning common subjects or personal opinions. Her personal understanding grew over time, just as it did for biblical prophets, which does not invalidate previously received inspiration.
In conclusion, the belief in Ellen White as a prophet stems from a deep conviction that her ministry aligns with biblical prophecies concerning the manifestation of the prophetic gift in the remnant church, and that the Holy Spirit works through individuals to provide guidance and correction throughout history, even beyond the biblical canon. However, discernment and adherence to scriptural truth remain paramount.
