Experiential Knowledge of God: A Transforming Personal Connection
Is your knowledge of God a mere theory or a living experience?
Experiential knowledge of God
AdventAI
Experimental knowledge of God is a living, practical acquaintance with His character and will that transforms the heart and life through a personal connection with Jesus Christ. This experience is far more than a theoretical or doctrinal understanding of the truth, as even the greatest knowledge of truth cannot save us unless it is practical.
The Nature of Experimental Knowledge
A Vital Union: Experimental Christianity is the vital current of grace flowing from the heart of Christ into the human vessel, which then flows out to others John 1:14-16.
Practical Obedience: True knowledge of God is demonstrated by a life of self-denial, self-sacrifice, and heartfelt obedience to His law 2 Peter 1:2-4.
Character Transformation: It involves a thorough conversion of the soul, tongue, and lips, where the character of Christ is studied and exemplified.
Personal Connection: This knowledge is obtained through individual consecration and a personal conversion that allows the Holy Spirit to soften and subdue the heart.
The Importance of Practical Knowledge in Education and Ministry
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and any education is deficient unless students are educated in the school of Christ. Ministers must not rely on outward appearance, wealth, or a controversial spirit, but must have a practical knowledge of God to speak intelligently of Him. When the daily experience is one of looking unto Jesus, a harmonious character is revealed, and the word of God brings a healing, soothing power into the practical life.
Barriers to Experiential Religion
Worldliness and Pomp: A desire for appearance, wealth, and worldly honor acts as a "canker" that eats into the vitals of spirituality.
Cold Formalism: A dead form of piety or a mere theory of truth is of no value and can be worse than never knowing the truth at all.
Unbelief and Stubbornness: Hard hearts that refuse to cast out self prevent the Lord from having an influence over the soul.
Neglect of the Sabbath: Whoever professes an experimental knowledge of God but refuses to hallow the Sabbath denies Him in heart and worksEze 20:20.
The Fruit of True Knowledge
Those who possess a genuine, practical knowledge of God will not remain silent; they will communicate the love of Christ to others. They will be raised above earthly and sensual enjoyments and become partakers of the divine nature 2 Peter 1:4. This living experience provides the believer with a firm foundation that cannot be overborne by the doubts of skeptics or the temptations of the enemy. Eternal life itself consists of this experimental knowledge: knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent John 17:3.
