Understanding Genesis 2:2 and the Sabbath's Origin
Did God actually perform any labor on the first seventh day?
Does Genesis 2:2 mean that God worked up until the seventh day? When did the Sabbath start

2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

Genesis 2:2 does not mean that God performed any creative labor on the seventh day; rather, it signifies that His work was fully completed by the time the seventh day began. The Sabbath institution started at the very close of the creation week in Eden, immediately following the six literal days of God's labor.
The Completion of God's Work 🛠️
The phrase indicating God "ended His work" on the seventh day is best understood as God having finished His work by the seventh day, meaning no part of creation was performed during that holy time.
The work of creation was entirely finished within the first six literal days of time Genesis 1:31.
On the seventh day itself, God did not work but instead ceased from His labor and was refreshed Exodus 31:17.
By ceasing His labor, God identified the seventh day as a specific rest-day, distinct from the six working days.
The Origin of the Sabbath 🌅
The Sabbath was instituted in Paradise immediately following the close of the creation week.
It is as old as the human race, having been made specifically for man at the dawn of human history Mark 2:27.
The act of making the Sabbath involved three distinct steps by the Creator: He rested on the seventh day, He blessed the day, and He sanctified or set it apart for holy use Genesis 2:2-3.
Because the reason for the Sabbath—God's rest—existed at the very moment creation ended, the institution began then and not thousands of years later at Sinai.
The Nature of the Seventh Day 🕊️
The seventh day is the "Sabbath of the Lord," serving as a memorial of His creative power and a sign of His authority Exodus 20:10.
Sanctifying the day means God gave a command for its observance to Adam and Eve as representatives of the entire human family.
This original Sabbath was a literal twenty-four-hour period, measured from evening to evening, just like the six days of labor that preceded it Genesis 1:5Leviticus 23:32.
As a memorial of a finished work, the Sabbath brings the living, sanctifying presence of the Creator to those who observe it.
