Gideon's Victory: The Barley Loaf and the Sword
How can a humble loaf of barley bread signify a mighty victory?
Sermon and title for a 30 minutes Sermon on "And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along. And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host. And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian. And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do. When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream to his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, see, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came to a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand has God delivered Midian, and all the host.
15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD has delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
17 And he said to them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall you do.
18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow you the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

🍞 The Barley Loaf and the Sword of Victory
👧 A Story for the Children: The Little Loaf that Could
Children, imagine you have a tiny, hard piece of barley bread. Now imagine that little piece of bread rolling down a big hill and hitting a giant, strong camping tent. You would think the bread would just bounce off, right? But in God’s hands, that little loaf was so powerful that it knocked the whole tent flat on the ground! This story teaches us that even if we feel small or weak, like a little piece of bread, God can use us to do giant things if we have faith in Him.
🛡️ Divine Encouragement in the Darkest Hour
Gideon stood on the brow of a hill, looking down at a valley filled with enemies that looked like swarming locusts for multitude Judges 7:12. He trembled as he thought of the conflict ahead. The Midianites had impoverished Israel for seven years, forcing the people to hide in mountain dens and caves Judges 6:2. But the Lord is a shield for those who trust Him, and He spoke to Gideon in the night season, telling him to go down to the enemy camp to hear something for his encouragement Psalms 3:3-4.
Accompanied by his servant Phurah, Gideon crept through the darkness to the outside of the armed men in the Midianite host Judges 7:10-11. There, he heard a soldier telling a dream to his companion about a cake of barley bread that tumbled into the host and overturned a tent Judges 7:13. The interpretation given by the other soldier was a direct message from God: "This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash... for into his hand hath God delivered Midian" Judges 7:14.
The Power is of God: The barley loaf represented the apparently powerless condition of the little company of Israelites.
A Token of Victory: Gideon recognized the voice of God speaking through these strangers and immediately bowed in worship.
Faith Replaced Fear: Unbelieving fear was swept away before living faith as Gideon returned to his men with a new rallying cry: "Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian" Judges 7:15.
🎺 The Strategy of the Three Hundred
The Lord had already reduced Gideon’s army from thirty-two thousand down to just three hundred men. This was done to stain human glory, so that Israel could not boast that their own hand had saved them Judges 7:2. These three hundred were "minute men," selected because they were earnest and watchful, lapping water from their hands rather than kneeling leisurely to drink.
Gideon divided this small band into three companies and gave every man a trumpet and a pitcher containing a lighted lamp Judges 7:16.
Trumpets: Signifying a mighty movement and the gathering of God's power.
Pitchers: Simple, humble instruments that concealed the light until the right moment.
Lamps: Representing the light of truth that must shine out to discomfit the darkness.
They surrounded the camp at midnight, and at Gideon's signal, they broke the pitchers, let the light shine, and blew the trumpets while shouting, "The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon" Judges 7:19-20. The Midianites, struck by supernatural terror from God, began to slay one another in the confusion and fled in dismay Judges 7:21-22.
✝️ The Science of Salvation in Action
The victory of Gideon is a profound lesson in the science of salvation. It teaches us that God is not dependent upon numbers, great intellect, or high position. He employs the weakest instruments and the simplest means to do His work so that man is not the object of attraction, but the Lord God of Israel is exalted.
Our salvation is entirely a work of grace, but it requires our cooperation. Grace provided the victory, but Gideon had to act; grace threw down the walls of Jericho, but the people had to march. We must work out our own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in us to will and to do His good pleasure Philippians 2:12-13. The cross of Calvary is our life-healing balm, revealing the virtue that enables us to overcome through the blood of the Lamb Revelation 12:11.
📢 The Final Appeal: What Are You Going to Do?
Today, the Lord is watching every worker to see if they are in earnest, grasping the interests of the soul with all their might. We are living in the most solemn period of history, and the destiny of multitudes is being decided. Like Gideon’s army, we are being tested; will you be among the fearful who return home, or will you be among the faithful few who follow the special directions of God?
I entreat you to trust self less and Jesus more. Do not trust in numbers or human wisdom, for these will surely fail.
Forsake your sins: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us 1 John 1:9.
Step out in faith: Move forward in obedience, even when the methods seem unpromising to finite judgment.
Commit today: Will you join the "Gideon band" that carries the light of the third angel's message to a dying world?
The banner of truth is lifted aloft. The Lord's own arm is stretched out to save. Arise, for the Lord has delivered the enemy into your hand Judges 7:15. What is your decision today?
