Understanding God the Father as the Source of Love
Can God be love without being three divine persons?
The bible states that God is love. Ty Gibson in his book The Sonship of Christ states that God cannot be love unless He is a minimum of three divine persons. Can God the Father in Himself alone be love according to the KJV Bible and the writings of Ellen G. White?

Yes, God the Father is absolutely and inherently love in His own person, as He is the ultimate source of all goodness and life 1 John 4:8. While some suggest a minimum of three persons is required for God to be love, the scriptures reveal that God’s love is a fundamental attribute of His character that exists independently of human philosophical theories.
The Nature of God as Love
God is love in His very essence, and this love is manifested through His actions and His relationship with His Son 1 John 4:8.
Absolute Goodness: The Father alone is supremely and absolutely good, and He alone is self-existent and immortal in an absolute sense.
The Source of Life: Because the Father has life in Himself, He is the fountain from which all love and life flow, including the life He gave to His Son John 5:26.
Everlasting Love: He declares to His people that He has loved them with an everlasting love, drawing them with loving-kindness Jeremiah 31:3.
The Father and the Son
The relationship between the Father and the Son demonstrates the practical expression of this love without requiring a specific numerical formula of persons.
Distinct Persons: The Father and Son are two distinct persons, as shown by Christ's constant prayers to His Father and His declaration that He was sent by the Father John 17:1-26.
Unity of Spirit: Their oneness is not a merging of persons into one being, but a perfect union of heart, mind, and purpose in the plan of redemption.
A Mutual Pledge: The Father and Son entered into a mutual pledge and covenant to save fallen humanity, a bond of love that existed before the world was made.
Problems with Trinitarian Definitions
Traditional Trinitarian views often create logical and scriptural difficulties that can actually obscure the reality of God's love and the sacrifice of Christ.
Degrading the Atonement: If one holds that the Divine nature cannot suffer or die, then the sacrifice at Calvary is reduced to a merely human offering, which "degrades the atonement".
Scriptural Silence: While the Bible abundantly teaches the divinity and pre-existence of Christ, it remains silent regarding the technical doctrine of a Trinity.
Confusion of Identity: The idea of a "three-one-God" can lead to the absurdity of God sending Himself, dying to reconcile the world to Himself, and praying to Himself.
The Practical Application of Love
True religion is not found in complex "hair-splitting points in theology," but in a practical, living faith that reflects God's character.
Reflecting the Divine Nature: We are invited to become partakers of the divine nature and to love others as God has loved us.
The Threefold Power: In the work of salvation, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost act as the "threefold powers in the heavenly world" to support the believer.
A Simple Standard: God’s claims remain the same across all ages: to love Him with all the heart and to love one's neighbor as oneself Deuteronomy 6:4-5Leviticus 19:18.
