Understanding God's Rest on the Seventh Day
If an infinite God doesn't get tired, why did He rest on the seventh day?
God did not rest on the seventh day. He ceased from creation on the seventh day. He does not need to rest as humans do. Comment on this statement.

The seventh day is explicitly identified as the day on which God rested from all His work of creation Genesis 2:2. While God is infinite, the act of resting on the seventh day was a literal event that established the weekly cycle and the foundation of the Sabbath for the benefit of mankind Mark 2:27.
The Reality of God's Rest
The record of the first week of time establishes a specific order: first, the six days of labor, and second, God resting on the seventh day Genesis 2:1-2. This rest was not merely a cessation of activity but a period of spiritual refreshing and delight in the perfection of His accomplished work Exodus 31:17. It is a fundamental fact that the Lord worked for six literal days and rested on the seventh, and this historical fact remains unchangeable to all eternity.
Rest vs. Mere Cessation
Significance of Sabbath: The term "Sabbath" itself signifies "Rest," and God specifically hallowed the day because He rested upon it.
The Act of Sanctification: God did not sanctify the day by resting; rather, He first rested and then blessed and set the day apart as a holy memorial of His rest Genesis 2:3.
Refreshment of the Creator: The scriptures state that on the seventh day God rested and was "refreshed," showing that the day was more than just a stopping point; it was a satisfied contemplation of His creation Exodus 31:17.
The Sabbath Made for Man
Although God does not experience exhaustion as finite beings do, He measured off this first cycle of seven days as a sample for all successive weeks until the close of time. The Sabbath was "made for man" to provide a weekly opportunity for him to rest from his own works and enter into the spiritual rest and worship of his Creator Mark 2:27. By observing the seventh day, we acknowledge the living God who made heaven and earth and honor the memorial He established at the very beginning of the world.
A Permanent Memorial
The rest God enjoyed when creation was finished is the identical rest He offers to His people to enter by faith Hebrews 4:3-4. This institution was established in Eden before the fall and will continue to be observed by the redeemed and the heavenly host throughout all eternity in the new earth. Because the Sabbath is based on the unchangeable facts of the first week of time, the seventh day remains the only true Rest-day of the Lord.
