God's Plan and Free Will: A Divine Paradox?
Why does God give us free will if He has a plan for our lives?
if God had already planned out our lives why is he giving us free will
AdventAI
God gives us free will even though He has a plan for our lives because His plan is for us to freely choose to cooperate with Him, and He desires our willing service, not forced obedience. He respects our individual choices, and our destiny is ultimately fixed by our own decisions.
Here's a closer look at this profound truth:
God's Purpose and Our Freedom
God's plan for humanity is not one of rigid predetermination that negates free will, but rather an eternal purpose to gather all things in Christ and to glorify humanity through Him. He has arranged this plan from the beginning, and He desires that we willingly allow Him to carry it out in our lives. The very essence of God's interaction with us is based on choice, as seen in Deuteronomy 11:26 "Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse." We are given the ability to choose between good and evil, and our choices determine our eternal destiny.
Foreknowledge vs. Foreordination
It is important to understand that God's foreknowledge does not equate to foreordination in a way that removes our freedom. God sees the future as clearly as we see the present, and He knows the choices we will make. However, His knowledge does not compel us to act in a certain way. Just as observing someone's actions does not make you responsible for them, God's foreknowledge of our choices does not force us to make them. Instead, events transpire, and He foreknows them because they are to transpire, especially those connected with free moral agency.
The Consequences of Choice
Our choices have significant consequences, shaping our character and ultimately fixing our destiny. If we choose to rebel against God, its purity, holiness, and peace would be torture to us; the glory of God would be a consuming fire. Our exclusion from heaven would be voluntary, and just and merciful on God's part, as He allows us to have what we have so determinedly chosen. This is a clear demonstration that God respects our free will.
God's Desire for Our Salvation
God "willeth that all men should be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth" 1 Timothy 2:4 and "the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men" Titus 2:11. He has made every provision for our salvation at infinite cost, and the only way we can be lost is by refusing to let Him save us. He does not want anyone to perish Ezekiel 18:31. The choice of our eternal destiny rests with us.
In conclusion, God's plan is inclusive of our free will, and He desires a relationship with us based on love and voluntary obedience, rather than compulsion.
