God's Principles for Dating & Courtship
Drawing from the beautiful story of Eliezer, Isaac, and Rebekah in Genesis 24 here are seven principles to help you navigate dating with faith and wisdom Genesis 24:1-67.
1. Put God First - No Compromise of Faith
Finding a partner who loves the Lord just as much as you do is essential. Abraham insisted that his son should not marry someone who worshipped idols, but rather someone from his own kindred who believed in the true God Genesis 24:3-4. Marrying someone who doesn't share your faith can create a major roadblock in your spiritual journey and can even lead your heart away from the truth.
2. Lead with Prayer, Not Just "Vibes"
Do not make a move in a relationship without talking to God first. When Eliezer arrived at the city, he prayed specifically for guidance so that he would not make a mistake Genesis 24:12-14. A healthy relationship is not built on just a "vibe," blind passion, or a spirit of flirting. Instead of letting your emotions run the show, invite God into the process and ask for His wisdom. 🙏
3. Three Most Important Questions
Let the questions be raised, 1) Will this union help me heavenward? 2) will it increase my love for God? and 3) will it enlarge my sphere of usefulness in this life? If these reflections present no drawback, then in the fear of God move forward. The ultimate goal of a Christian relationship is to develop the purest affections and the noblest traits of character. When you choose a partner based on these holy principles, the result will be a tender and beautiful picture of domestic happiness Genesis 24:67.
4. Place Character Over Looks
Focus on finding someone with a kind heart and a strong work ethic rather than just an attractive exterior. Eliezer looked for a specific act of courtesy as a sign from God. Rebekah proved she was energetic and helpful by her willingness to water all the camels Genesis 24:18-19. A young woman should seek a life companion who is honest, hardworking, and truly respects God. A young man should look for a partner who is ready to share life’s responsibilities and who will help him become a better person. 💪
5. Keep it Pure & Classy
Your courtship should be handled with total respect and modesty. You should never say anything or do anything that you would not want the holy angels to see and record in the books of heaven. 😇
6. Seek Wisdom from Mentors
The perspectives of your parents and godly mentors are incredibly valuable. Even as a mature adult, Isaac respected his father's judgment and the help of a God-fearing mentor in finding a wife. You should avoid "secret" dating or keeping your relationship hidden from your family. Trying to win someone’s heart behind their parents' back is actually a form of dishonesty and shows a lack of integrity. It is much safer to weigh the situation carefully with the help of those who have more experience.
7. Do YOU Clearly See God's Leading?
While seeking advice is essential, you must also have a personal conviction that God is leading you. Rebekah was given the final choice, and she chose to go because she believed it was God’s plan for her life Genesis 24:58. By following these biblical steps, you can build a marriage that is holy, honorable, and full of genuine happiness Genesis 24:67.
Aligning your heart with God's will for your future is one of the best decisions you can ever make! By seeking His wisdom and staying pure, you are building a foundation for a lifetime of joy. 🌟
