Our Greatest Need: The Power of the Holy Spirit
Why do many believers remain powerless despite God's promise of the Spirit?
Below is a detailed learning explanation of Day 1 — Our Greatest Need: The Holy Spirit. Main Theme
AdventAI
The greatest spiritual need of the church today is the fullness of the Holy Spirit, which is the only agency that can bring power, efficiency, and true transformation of character. This divine influence is essential to prepare us for the soon coming of the Lord and to meet the perils of these last days.
The Indispensable Nature of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the beginning of eternal life and the source of all spiritual culture. Without this endowment, our efforts in the ministry and in personal life remain dry, spiritless, and as destitute of righteousness as the offering of Cain.
A Gift Beyond Expression: The blessings brought by the Spirit are beyond the power of language to express, making us holy and Christlike.
The Source of Efficiency: Human talent, education, and intellectual powers are insufficient for success in God's work without the strengthening of Christ through His Spirit.
The Guide for All Work: Whether in business, school, or home, the Spirit’s guidance is needed to maintain a devotional spirit and to discharge duties with fidelity.
Transformation and Heart Work
The presence of the Holy Spirit is not a matter of mere feeling but is manifested in an outward transformation of character.
Breaking the Heart: There must be a deep heart-searching and the breaking of stubborn hearts to allow for the confession and blotting out of every sin.
Sanctification: This is a lifetime process of dying to self and yielding the will to God's requirements. As we behold Jesus, the Spirit carries on the work of conforming us to His image 2 Corinthians 3:18.
Unity and Love: When the Spirit controls the life, contention, strife, and pride are put away, replaced by the meekness and lowliness of Christ.
The Result of Receiving the Spirit
When we receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, we work with a power never felt before, and love, faith, and hope become an abiding presence.
Power for Witnessing: The Spirit gives edge to the words of the minister and enables believers to warn the world with a living message fresh from the throne of glory.
Discerning Needs: Only through the Holy Spirit can we truly understand and meet the spiritual needs of those around us, revealing Christ’s tender, pitying love.
All Other Blessings: The Holy Spirit brings all other blessings in its train, providing the necessary spiritual endowment to stand through the coming trials.
Our Part in Seeking the Blessing
God is waiting to bestow this gift, but it depends on our cooperation and earnest seeking.
Humble Prayer: We must realize our soul poverty and plead for the holy unction, just as the disciples did before Pentecost.
Cleansing the Vessel: We are to keep the heart clean and "right side up," ready to receive the heavenly rain through daily conversion and submission.
Obedience: The Spirit is promised to those who follow Christ and obey His commandments, for the carnal mind is at enmity with God’s law Romans 8:7.
"Receive ye the Holy Ghost" is the call of the Lord to His church in this time of peril John 20:22. If we will shut ourselves in with God and seek His Spirit, we shall recognize the voice of Jesus saying, "Come up higher".

Our Greatest Need: The Holy Spirit “And I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:9-13 It is the power of the Holy Spirit that is needed. There is with you and with the flock of God a self-satisfied feeling that must be broken up. The Spirit of God is a convincing power. When this is breathed upon the church, there will be a decided change in their spiritual efficiency. The Lord God is ready to give, but many do not realize their necessity of receiving. They are weak, when they might be strong; powerless, when they might be powerful through receiving the efficiency of the Holy Spirit. Their light is dim. Arouse them from their self-satisfied, self-righteous condition. (Testimonies to Southern Africa, p. 69) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you, And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. (John 16:7, 8, KJV) We need the softening, subduing, refining influence of the Holy Spirit, to mold our characters, and to bring every thought into captivity to Christ. It is the Holy Spirit that will enable us to overcome, that will lead us to sit at the feet of Jesus, as did Mary, and learn His meekness and lowliness of heart. We need to be sanctified by the Holy Spirit every hour of the day, lest we be ensnared by the enemy, and our souls be imperiled. (God’s Amazing Grace, p. 203) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. (John 16:13-15, KJV) A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs. To seek this should be our first work. There must be earnest effort to obtain the blessing of the Lord, not because God is not willing to bestow His blessing upon us, but because we are unprepared to receive it. Our heavenly Father is more willing to give His Holy Spirit to them that ask Him, than are earthly parents to give good gifts to their children. But it is our work, by confession, humiliation, repentance, and earnest prayer, to fulfill the conditions upon which God has promised to grant us His blessing. A revival need be expected only in answer to prayer. While the people are so destitute of God’s Holy Spirit, they cannot appreciate the preaching of the Word; but when the Spirit’s power touches their hearts, then the discourses given will not be without effect. Guided by the teachings of God’s Word, with the manifestation of His Spirit, in the exercise of sound discretion, those who attend our meetings will gain a precious experience, and returning home, will be prepared to exert a healthful influence. (Selected Messages, book 1, p. 121) The descent of the Holy Spirit upon the church is looked forward to as in the future; but it is the privilege of the church to have it now. Seek for it, pray for it, believe for it. We must have it, and Heaven is waiting to bestow it. (The Review and Herald, Mar. 19, 1895) Christ has promised the gift of the Holy Spirit to His church, and the promise belongs to us as much as to the first disciples. But like every other promise, it is given on conditions. There are many who believe and profess to claim the Lord’s promise; they talk about Christ and about the Holy Spirit, yet receive no benefit. They do not surrender the soul to be guided and controlled by the divine agencies. We cannot use the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is to use us. Through the Spirit God works in His people “to will and to do of His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13. But many will not submit to this. They want to manage themselves. This is why they do not receive the heavenly gift. Only to those who wait humbly upon God, who watch for His guidance and grace, is the Spirit given. The power of God awaits their demand and reception. This promised blessing, claimed by faith, brings all other blessings in its train. (The Desire of Ages, p. 672) Questions for Personal Reflection 1. The word ask (aiteo) used at the end of verse 13 in Luke 11 is a form of continual asking. Why do you think God used this form of the word? 2. Does anything hinder you from asking God daily for the Holy Spirit to come into your heart and life? Will you surrender those things to God today?

The Holy Spirit is the essential divine agency that brings spiritual efficiency, reproves the heart of sin, and empowers every believer to reflect the character of Christ John 16:7-8. This heavenly gift is readily available to all who humbly seek it through earnest prayer and total surrender of the soul Philippians 2:13.
The Promise of Asking: Luke 11:9-13
God encourages a persistent and active pursuit of His presence through the simple acts of asking, seeking, and knocking Luke 11:9-10.
A Father’s Willingness: Just as an earthly father would not give his son a stone or a scorpion when asked for food, our heavenly Father is infinitely more willing to bestow the Holy Spirit upon those who ask Him Luke 11:11-13.
Breaking Self-Satisfaction: Many believers remain weak and powerless because they do not realize their deep necessity for this gift. A self-satisfied, self-righteous condition often prevents us from receiving the strength God is ready to give.
Continual Asking: The promise is given to those who wait humbly upon God and watch for His guidance, acknowledging that we cannot use the Spirit, but the Spirit must use us Philippians 2:13.
The Convicting Power: John 16:7-8
The departure of Christ was necessary so that the Comforter could come to abide with the church John 16:7.
Reproof of the Heart: The Spirit of God is a convincing power that must be breathed upon the church to bring about a decided change. He works to reprove the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment John 16:8.
A Change in Efficiency: When this power is received, it breaks up deadness and worldly-mindedness, transforming a sleepy indifference into a living reality for the work of God.
Guidance into All Truth: John 16:13-15
The Holy Spirit serves as the ultimate Guide, ensuring that the message of truth goes forth with power.
Glorifying Christ: The Spirit does not speak of Himself but takes the things of Christ and shows them to the believer John 16:13-14.
A Living Reality: Under the Spirit's guidance, the truth becomes more than just imaginations or dreams; it becomes a living reality that enables believers to shine amid moral darkness.
Divine Cooperation: Philippians 2:13
The reception of the Holy Spirit is dependent upon the surrender of the human will to the divine agency Philippians 2:13.
Willing and Doing: It is through the Spirit that God works in His people both "to will and to do of His good pleasure" Philippians 2:13.
The Taper from the Altar: Every believer is called to kindle his taper from the divine altar, receiving the efficiency needed to perform missionary work and bear decided testimonies.
Urgency of the Time: Because the end is near and time is passing, it is vital that we feel the depth of our need to watch unto prayer and use our entrusted talents now.
