Growing in Christ

Growing in Christ is a continuous, lifelong process of developing a character that reflects the image of Jesus through constant connection with Him and a diligent study of His Word. This spiritual advancement is not achieved by human effort or self-exaltation, but by looking away from self and beholding the perfection of the Redeemer.

The Nature of Spiritual Growth 🌱

  • A Continuous Process: Christian growth is like the germination of a seed; it is silent and imperceptible but must be continuous, or the plant will die. At every stage, the life may be perfect, yet there must be constant advancement in knowledge and experience.

  • Looking to the Sun: Just as a plant grows by looking to the sun and absorbing its rays, the Christian grows by looking to Jesus, the Sun of Righteousness. We cannot grow by looking at ourselves or others; we must simply let the "law of the Spirit of life" work within us Romans 8:2.

  • Daily Transformation: True growth involves a daily dying to self and a constant reformation of character to meet the divine standard 1 Corinthians 15:31. As we behold Christ, we are changed day by day into His likeness, often unconsciously reflecting His image to the world 2 Corinthians 3:18.

Essential Means of Growth 📖

  • Study of the Scriptures: The Bible is the infallible guide and the foundation of faith. Diligent study of the Word, as practiced by Christ in His youth, strengthens the faculties and imparts holy joy.

  • Prayer and Devotion: Constant connection with God through prayer is the source of spiritual strength. The early morning hours are especially valuable for searching the Scriptures and seeking the heavenly Father.

  • Active Service for Others: Christian growth is greatly promoted by active labor in God's vineyard. When we neglect to care for the souls and bodies of others, our spirituality saps away, and we become spiritual dwarfs.

  • Healthy Living: Proper stewardship of our physical strength and life is required to maintain unclouded perceptions, which are necessary to discriminate between right and wrong.

The Standard of Growth ⚖️

  • The Full Stature of Christ: Every believer is required to grow up to the full stature of Christ, their living head Ephesians 4:13. This includes an expansion of mind, a sharpened intellect, and an increase in spiritual understanding.

  • Obedience to the Law: The only standard by which we can know we are truly growing in the knowledge of Christ is the law of God. The more one grows in grace, the more perfectly they will keep the commandments.

  • Fruit-Bearing: Righteousness is the fruit of abiding in Christ. Those planted in the house of the Lord will flourish like a palm tree and continue to bring forth fruit even in old age Psalms 92:12-14.

Overcoming Obstacles 🛡️

  • Dying to Self: Self-importance and self-sufficiency are major barriers to growth; self must be laid in the dust so that Christ can be all in all.

  • Enduring Trials: God permits trials and temptations to test our faith, increase our love, and perfect our trust in Him. Through suffering with Christ, we grow in grace and are conformed to His image 2 Corinthians 12:10.

  • Avoiding Stagnation: Many who have a knowledge of the truth fail to grow because they lack fresh personal experience and new victories in the holy warfare. We must either advance or retrograde; there is no standing still in the Christian life.

By maintaining a constant union with the living Vine, we draw the strength and perfection of Christ’s character into our own lives, becoming safe against all the assaults of Satan John 15:4-5.
