Understanding the Health Message: Divine Principles for Well-Being

How can healthful living serve as the 'right arm' of a spiritual message?

What is the health message?

AdventAI

The health message is a divine gift designed to prepare a people for the coming of the Lord by linking the gospel of Christ with the principles of healthful living. This message, often referred to as the "right arm" of the third angel’s message, focuses on the restoration of the physical, mental, and spiritual powers so that the divine nature may be revealed in its fullness.

The Core Principles of the Message

The health message is built upon timeless principles found in the Word of God and given through special light to guide the church.

  • Temperance and Self-Denial: True temperance involves the total disuse of harmful substances and a moderate, sensible use of that which is healthful. This includes laying aside "darling luxuries" like tea, coffee, tobacco, and intoxicating liquors, which create an unnatural state of mind and body.

  • Dietary Reform: A simple, nutritious diet consisting of grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts is recommended as the best for man’s use. While the use of flesh meat is not made a test of fellowship, it is strongly discouraged because it strengthens animal propensities and can be a cause of disease.

  • The Use of Nature’s Remedies: Instead of depending on poisonous drugs that paralyze nature's powers, the message advocates for the use of "nature's own furnished remedies": pure air, pure water, sunlight, exercise, and proper rest.

  • Modesty in Dress: Followers are encouraged to dress plainly and modestly, using durable material that is appropriate for the age without letting the dress question fill the mind.

The Purpose and Goal

The ultimate objective of health reform is not merely physical health, but the highest development of the soul and mind.

  • Preparation for the End: Health reform is a preparatory work to meet the events brought to view by the third angel’s message, such as the coming of the Lord and the reflecting of Christ’s image.

  • Sacred Relationship with God: By keeping the body and mind in the most favorable condition through temperance, believers are brought into a sacred relation to God for better service.

  • A "Living Sacrifice": We are called to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our reasonable service Romans 12:1.

Medical Missionary Work

The health message is practically applied through gospel medical missionary work, which acts as the "pioneer work" or "entering wedge" for the gospel.

  • Following Christ’s Example: True medical missionaries follow the example of Christ, who ministered to physical needs while preaching the Word Matthew 16:24.

  • Breaking Down Prejudice: Demonstrating health principles through sanitariums, treatment rooms, and hygienic restaurants helps remove prejudice and opens doors to hearts that might otherwise be closed.

  • Service to All: This work is intended to reach all classes—high and low, rich and poor—showing them how to prevent disease and regain health through right habits.

The Lord requires us to glorify Him in our bodies and spirits, for we are not our own but were bought with a great price 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. By walking in this light, the despondent find hope, the weak become strong, and the church becomes a powerful influence for good in the world.
