Holiness as a Lifelong Journey to God's Kingdom

Is holiness a one-time event or a lifelong journey of growth?

AdventAI

To enter God's kingdom we must be holy, now are we holy?is holiness a one time event or it's a process?

AdventAI

Holiness is a progressive, lifelong work of transformation rather than a single event, and while we cannot attain it through our own efforts, it is a mandatory qualification for entering the kingdom of God.

The Nature of Holiness and the Kingdom

  • A Spiritual Kingdom: The kingdom of God is not an outward show or a matter of physical food and drink, but is defined as righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost Romans 14:17.

  • The Necessity of New Birth: No one can see or enter this kingdom unless they are born again, a process where the carnal mind, which is at enmity with God, is renewed by divine grace John 3:3.

  • Current State of Holiness: We are made holy only by the presence of God dwelling within us. This holiness is manifested through obedience to God's commandments and the reflecting of Christ’s character in our daily lives 1 John 2:4-5.

Sanctification: A Lifelong Process

Holiness, or sanctification, is not the work of a moment, an hour, or even a single year. It is a progressive work that continues throughout a person's entire life.

  • Continuous Growth: We must grow from grace to grace and character to character, constantly subduing self and overcoming besetments 2 Peter 1:5-8.

  • Daily Conflict: As long as Satan exists, we must engage in a lifelong struggle for conquest over self and sin. We are to "die daily" to our own inclinations to fit ourselves for the society of heaven.

  • No Stopping Place: There is no point in this life where a person can claim to have fully attained or reached a stopping place in their spiritual development.

How Holiness is Attained

  • Divine and Human Cooperation: Salvation and sanctification require the cooperation of the divine influence—the Holy Spirit—and the strong, living faith of the believer.

  • The Role of the Holy Spirit: The Spirit transforms our nature, purges the conscience from dead works, and brings the soul into harmony with the principles of God’s law.

  • Focusing on Jesus: By beholding Jesus and studying His life, we are changed into His image, receiving the perfection of His character as a free gift 2 Corinthians 3:18.

  • Obedience to Truth: True sanctification comes through knowing and implicitly following the requirements of God revealed in His Word John 17:17.

The Final Test

To be ready for the kingdom, we must be found without spot or blameless 2 Peter 3:14. Those who claim to be holy while willfully violating God's commandments are deceived, as the true test of holiness is whether the life is in accord with the moral standard of God's law. Ultimately, holiness is the indispensable qualification for receiving the victor's crown and inhabiting the new earth.
