What is the investigative judgment?

AdventAI

The investigative judgment is a crucial and solemn work of judgment occurring in the heavenly sanctuary before Christ's second advent, which began in 1844 🗓️. It is also referred to as the pre-advent judgment or the cleansing of the sanctuary, and it marks the completion of our Lord's priestly office.

Here's a closer look at this important process:

What is the Investigative Judgment?

It is a preliminary judicial process in heaven where the lives of professed believers are reviewed 📖. This judgment determines who, through repentance of sin and faith in Christ, is entitled to the benefits of His atonement and is worthy of eternal life. It decides who will receive a part in the first resurrection and who of the living multitudes are worthy of translation without seeing death.

When Did it Begin?

This judgment commenced in the heavenly sanctuary in 1844, at the close of the 2300-day prophetic period mentioned in Daniel 8:14. This event was heralded by a worldwide message, announcing that "the hour of His judgment is come" Revelation 14:6-7. The period from 1844 until the close of human probation is characterized as the time of the investigative judgment.

Where Does it Take Place?

The investigative judgment occurs in the most holy place, or second apartment, of the heavenly sanctuary, where God the Father, the Ancient of Days, presides as Judge Daniel 7:9-10. Christ, our great High Priest, ministers here on behalf of humanity, presenting His own blood for those whose names are written in the book of life Hebrews 9:24.

Who is Judged?

This work focuses exclusively on the cases of the professed people of God. It begins with the righteous dead, examining the records of each successive generation, and eventually proceeds to the cases of the living righteous. The judgment of the wicked is a distinct work that takes place at a later period, during the millennium, with the saints participating alongside Christ in determining punishment.

What Does the Process Involve?

  1. Opening the Books: The judgment is set, and the books of record in heaven are opened Daniel 7:10. These books contain a faithful record of every person's life, including deeds, words, and even secret motives Ecclesiastes 12:14. The Book of Life contains the names of those who have believed on Jesus Luke 10:20.

  2. Examination of Records: Every name is mentioned, and every case is closely investigated. Christ, as our Advocate, shows the penitence and faith of His followers, claiming forgiveness for them before the Father and the holy angels.

  3. Blotting Out of Sins: For those who have truly repented and by faith claimed Christ's blood as their atoning sacrifice, their sins are blotted out from the books of heaven Acts 3:19. If sins remain unrepented of and unforgiven, names are blotted out of the Book of Life Exodus 32:33.

  4. Acceptance or Rejection: Names are accepted or rejected based on the examination of character against the standard of God's law Ecclesiastes 12:13-14. Those found to have the "wedding garment" of Christ's righteousness are accepted Matthew 22:11.

Significance for Believers

This is a period of solemn heart-searching, calling every individual to contemplate this grand judgment often. It emphasizes the need to perfect holiness in the fear of God, studying His Word, and living in obedience to His truth. We are encouraged to examine our own hearts and defects, rather than judging others. The decisions made in the investigative judgment will ultimately determine one's eternal destiny.
