Understanding Jesus as Divine and Fully God
Can Jesus be truly divine without being fully God?
What is the difference between "jesus is divine" and "jesus is God"?
AdventAI
The essential truth is that there is no division between these terms; to be divine is to possess the very nature of God, and Jesus Christ is both fully divine and truly God.
The Oneness of the Father and the Son
The divinity of Christ is defined by His perfect unity with the Father. This unity is so absolute that any claim that Christ worked on a separate plan from the Father is a denial of His divinity. Jesus explicitly declared His identity when He said, "I and my Father are one" John 10:30. This oneness means that in Christ, the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily, making Him equal with God by divine and eternal right.
Divinity Clothed in Humanity
To understand Jesus as God, one must look at how His divinity was expressed through His human life.
The Incarnation: In order to reach humanity, the Redeemer of the world clothed His divinity with human flesh.
Distinct Natures: While He became man, He did not cease to be God; the human did not become divine, nor did the divine become human.
The Image of God: Jesus is the express image of the invisible God, and because He was in the presence of the Father from the beginning, He alone was sufficient to represent the Deity to the world.
Biblical Evidence of His Deity
The Scriptures provide conclusive evidence that Jesus is the divine Son of God.
Pre-existence: The doctrine that denies Christ's existence before His advent to this world is a dangerous error that contradicts His own statements regarding His relationship with the Father.
Creator: From the Father, Christ spoke all things into existence, and by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth Psalms 33:6, 9.
Divine Titles: By divine right of inheritance, Jesus bears the name of "God" from the Father Hebrews 1:2-3.
The Practical Meaning for Believers
Recognizing Jesus as God is not merely a theological point but the foundation of salvation.
Restoration of Image: God and Christ work unitedly to restore the divine image in man, which is only possible because Christ is a partaker of the divine nature.
The Keynote of Victory: Through the knowledge of Jesus our Lord, His divine power gives us all things that pertain to life and godliness 2 Peter 1:2-3.
Requirement for Faith: Those who reject the deity of Christ cannot have a true conception of the plan of redemption, as only the divine and human together could bring the salvation needed by fallen man.
Ultimately, Jesus demonstrated that when humanity depends wholly upon God, it is possible to keep His commandments, and He invites us to be partakers of that same divine nature 2 Peter 1:4.
