The Blessed Hope: Jesus' Glorious Second Coming
What is the purpose of Jesus' second coming?
Jesus's second coming
AdventAI
The glorious truth of our Lord Jesus Christ's second coming is a central and blessed hope for all believers! It is an event that the Holy Scriptures speak of with great clarity and certainty, bringing with it both comfort for the righteous and a solemn warning for those who do not know God.
The Certainty of His Return
The Bible is filled with promises and descriptions of Jesus' second advent. Just as He ascended into heaven, He will return. The angels themselves declared this truth to the disciples:
"You men of Galilee, why stand you gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven." - Acts 1:11
This promise assures us that His coming will be personal, visible, and triumphant. The apostle Paul also emphasizes this truth:
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." - 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
This means that His coming is not a spiritual experience at death or conversion, but a literal, physical return when He will gather His people to Himself.
The Purpose of His Coming
The purpose of Christ's second coming is twofold: to receive His faithful children and to bring judgment upon the wicked.
"And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to myself; that where I am, there you may be also." - John 14:3
For those who have accepted Him as Savior, His return will be a day of immense joy and rest:
"And it shall be said in that day, See, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation." - Isaiah 25:9
However, for those who have rejected Him and His gospel, it will be a day of fearful judgment:
"When the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power." - 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9
Signs of His Coming
While the exact day and hour of Jesus' return are unknown to mankind, Jesus Himself gave us signs to watch for, so we would know when His coming is near.
"But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." - Matthew 24:36
Yet, He urged us to be discerning:
"Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near: So likewise you, when you shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors." - Matthew 24:32-33
These signs include times of tribulation, wars, famines, pestilences, earthquakes, and the rise of false prophets and false Christs.
"And you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that you be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places." - Matthew 24:6-7
There will also be a widespread rejection of God's truth, characterized by spiritual deception and the increase of scoffers.
"Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation." - 2 Peter 3:3-4
Despite this, the "gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness to all nations; and then shall the end come." - Matthew 24:14
Our Preparation
Given the certainty and grandeur of this event, our duty is to be prepared. Jesus admonishes us:
"Watch you therefore, and pray always, that you may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man." - Luke 21:36
This preparedness involves living soberly, righteously, and godly, eagerly awaiting His appearing.
"Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ." - Titus 2:12-13
It also means keeping His commandments and having the faith of Jesus, which forms the character of those ready for His return.
"Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus." - Revelation 14:12
Just as in the days of Noah, when people disregarded warnings until the flood came, so too will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.
"But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." - Matthew 24:37
Therefore, let us diligently search the Scriptures, live in holy conversation, and strive to be found blameless when He comes. Our hope is in His glorious return, for then "we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." - 1 John 3:2. ๐๐โจ
