The Living Power of the Word: Every Hand to the Harvest 🌾

Introduction: The Secret of Success

It is not excitement we wish to create, but deep, earnest consideration, that those who hear shall do solid work, real, sound, genuine work that will be enduring as eternity. We hunger not for excitement or the sensational; the less we have of this, the better. The calm, earnest reasoning from the Scriptures is precious and fruitful. Here is the secret of success: preaching a living personal Saviour in so simple and earnest a manner that the people may be able to lay hold by faith of the power of the Word of life. The highest of all work is the ministry in its various lines, and it should be kept before the youth that there is no work more blessed of God than that of the gospel minister.

👧 The Little Seed in the Garden

Children, imagine you have a tiny, beautiful seed in your hand. If you keep that seed in a box on a shelf, will it ever grow into a flower? No! But if you take that seed and plant it in the dirt, and your friend helps you water it, and your brother pulls the weeds around it, soon a beautiful flower appears. Jesus says His truth is like that seed Luke 14:23. He doesn't want only the "big people" or the "ministers" to hold the seeds. He wants every boy and girl to help plant them and water them. When we all work together, the whole world becomes a beautiful garden for God!

🏗️ A Divine Organization for Every Member

God has brought His people together in church capacity in order that they may reveal to the world the wisdom of Him who formed this organization. Adherence to His plans will enable us to testify of the divine authorship of God's great plan for the restoration of the world. Christ attaches great importance to the work of the ministry, but this does not mean preaching merely. It means personal effort also.

  • Diversity of Gifts: He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ Ephesians 4:11-12.

  • A United Body: The whole body is fitly framed together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth according to the effectual working in the measure of every part Ephesians 4:16.

  • The Goal of Unity: These gifts were heaven's appointed means to secure the unity of the church till we all come in the unity of the faith.

We must remember that the minister should not do all the work himself, but he should unite with him those who have taken hold of the truth. A working church will ever be a growing church. They will find a stimulus and a tonic in trying to help others, and in doing it they will be strengthened and encouraged.

👐 The Right Arm of the Gospel: Medical Missionary Work

The gospel of Christ is to be bound up with medical missionary work, and medical missionary work is to be bound up with the gospel ministry. No line is to be drawn between the genuine medical missionary work and the gospel ministry; these two must blend.

Medical missionary work is the pioneer work and the gospel in practice. It is the "helping hand" of the gospel ministry, preparing hearts for the sowing of the seed of truth. The Saviour of the world devoted more time and labor to healing the sick than to preaching. When He sent out the seventy, He commanded them to heal the sick first, in order that the way might be prepared for their minds to be reached by the truths they were to preach.

We are to give the last warning of God to men, and what should be our earnestness in studying the Bible, and our zeal in spreading the light! To the gospel ministry, we may attach the word "medical," for it is essential that the minister shall have a knowledge of disease and its causes. He should be able to teach the people how to treat the house we live in, for this is a part of the gospel.

🌊 The Power of the Holy Spirit

It is the absence of the Spirit that makes the gospel ministry so powerless. Learning, talents, and eloquence may be possessed, but without the presence of the Spirit of God, no heart will be touched. On the other hand, if we are connected with Christ and the gifts of the Spirit are ours, the poorest and most ignorant disciples will have a power that will tell upon hearts.

The Holy Spirit's office is to bring vital truths to our minds, not to be hidden in a napkin, but to be put out to the exchangers. When the divine power works with the human, the neglected word becomes a vivifying agency through the Spirit. God makes humble disciples the channel for the outworking of the highest influence in the universe.

⚖️ The Highest Credential

Christ met with the greatest success among the poor, and thus every human being, learned and unlearned, may find abundance to do. Helping those who are destitute, despised, forsaken, and afflicted is the highest credential of the gospel ministry. If the gospel had been of men, it would have been popular with the rich and mighty, but it pours contempt upon human greatness.

We are to work the works of Christ. This work ranks equally in importance with the work of the gospel ministry. We are called to manifest an untiring, patient interest in the salvation of those who need divine polishing. We must not permit ourselves to be hindered by human devices, but must listen to the fountain of wisdom.

📣 Appeal: What Are You Going To Do?

The Lord values His children and desires them to be happy, not suffering. He is calling for men and women who will consecrate themselves to the work of soul-saving. When we begin to comprehend what a sacrifice Christ made in order to save a perishing world, there will be seen a mighty wrestling to save souls.

Many who should be out in the field working as medical missionary evangelists are collecting in favored localities, binding up the forces in one place. But the Lord says, "Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that My house may be filled" Luke 14:23.

I call upon you today to awaken to a sense of the perils of this time. Will you place yourself in subjection to God so that His expressed will may be of value to you? Will you take His yoke upon you and learn of Him, for He is meek and lowly in heart Matthew 11:28-29?

The Master is coming, and He will commend those who have visited the sick and relieved the necessities of the afflicted. He will say, "Well done, good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord". What are you going to do with the talents God has given you? Will you decide today to be a laborer together with God 1 Corinthians 3:9? Turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart and act your part in the restoration of the world.

  • The Method: Calm, earnest reasoning from the Scriptures.
  • The Focus: Preaching a living, personal Savior so simply that everyone can grasp the power of God’s Word.
  • The Illustration: Truth is like a seed; it cannot stay in a box. It must be planted and tended by everyone—including children—to turn the world into God’s garden.

II. A Divine Organization for Every Member

  • Purpose of the Church: To reveal God’s wisdom and His plan for world restoration through organized effort.
  • Beyond the Pulpit: Ministry is not just preaching; it requires the personal effort of every member.
  • Unity in Diversity:
    • God provides a variety of gifts (apostles, prophets, teachers) to edify the church.
    • The "body" is only healthy when every "joint" (member) supplies its part.
  • Ministerial Leadership: The minister's role is not to do all the work, but to train and unite the members for service.

III. The Right Arm of the Gospel: Medical Missionary Work

  • The Blended Ministry: Gospel preaching and medical missionary work (healing) must never be separated.
  • The Pioneer Work: Practical medical work acts as the "helping hand" that prepares hearts for the seeds of truth.
  • The Example of Christ: Jesus spent more time healing than preaching; He commanded His disciples to heal first and then teach.

VI. Appeal: What Are You Going to Do?

  • Individual Consecration: God is calling for workers to move beyond "favored localities" and into the "highways and hedges."
  • The Motivation: A true comprehension of Christ’s sacrifice will lead to a mighty wrestling for souls.
  • The Final Evaluation: The Master is coming and will reward those who visited the sick and relieved the afflicted.
  • The Decision: Will you take up Christ’s yoke and use your talents as a "laborer together with God" today?
