Master of the Storm: Finding Rest in Christ

What three words did Jesus use to silence the raging storm on Galilee?

Mark 4:34-41

34 But without a parable spoke he not to them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

35 And the same day, when the even was come, he says to them, Let us pass over to the other side.

36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.

37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.

38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say to him, Master, care you not that we perish?

39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

40 And he said to them, Why are you so fearful? how is it that you have no faith?

41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

⚓ The Master of the Storm: Finding Rest in Christ

👦 Children’s Story: The Little Boat and the Big Voice

Once there was a tiny fishing boat out on a very large lake. The sky turned black, and the wind began to blow so hard that the boat felt like an eggshell being tossed by a giant. The disciples were strong, brave fishermen, but they were terrified because their boat was filling with water. They looked and saw Jesus fast asleep on a hard wooden plank. They woke Him up, crying, "Master, don't You care if we die?" Mark 4:38. Jesus stood up, not scared at all, and spoke to the wind and the waves just like a mother says "Hush" to a crying baby. He said, "Peace, be still," and immediately the wind stopped, and the water became as smooth as glass. The disciples learned that when Jesus is on board, we are always safe.

🌊 The Crisis on the Sea

The Savior was exhausted from His long and arduous labors, having spent the day teaching the multitudes in parables. Seeking rest, He stretched Himself upon the hard plank of the fisherman’s boat and fell into a deep sleep. Suddenly, the pleasant weather changed; clouds gathered darkly, and a furious storm burst upon the Sea of Galilee. The ship became the plaything of the storm, tossed upon mountain billows and plunged into deep troughs until it began to fill with water. Experienced as they were, the fishermen’s hearts filled with despair as they perceived the boat was sinking.

In their agony, they turned to the sleeping Master. This event was a parable of help, showing that everything depends on the view we take of the Person of Christ. When Christ sleepeth, there is storm; when He waketh, there is great peace. Never did a soul utter a cry for help unheeded. Jesus arose and rebuked the wind and the sea as Jehovah had done of old Psalms 106:9. He showed no signs of alarm but spoke as one equal with the Father, and nature recognized the voice of her Master.

🌬️ The Symbolic Winds and the Coming Storm

The winds in Scripture often symbolize political strife, war, and the commotion of nations Daniel 7:2. We are told that four angels are currently standing on the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds so they do not blow until the servants of God are sealed Revelation 7:1. This sealing is the last work to be accomplished for God's people before the seven last plagues are poured out Revelation 15:1.

  • Restraint: The elements of nature are placed in the power of angels.

  • Outbreaks: Occasionally, we see the winds begin to blow in rebellions and disasters, but these are suddenly restrained by an unseen power to allow more time for the sealing work.

  • The Final Conflict: When Jesus leaves the Sanctuary, He will no longer offer sacrifices or prayers for sins, and the four angels will let go of the winds.

  • The Result: Then the world will be plunged into a scene of strife and confusion that no pen can picture.

The Lord is slow to anger, but His forbearance will not always continue; a sudden change is coming in His dealings with sinful men Nahum 1:3.

🛡️ Building on the Rock

We must ask ourselves: upon what foundation are we building our characters? Those who work without truth enthroned in the heart are like clouds without water, carried about by every wind Jude 1:12. If we have not built upon the true foundation, we will be swept away in the great tempest that is soon to burst upon the world.

To be prepared, we must:

  1. Seek the Seal: We must receive the seal of the living God in our foreheads, which is the mark of His authority.

  2. Keep the Commandments: Safety is found only among those who keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus Revelation 14:12.

  3. Abide in the Vine: Like a branch joined to a vine, nothing can separate us from the love of God if we have a living union with Him Romans 8:35-39.

Just as the rainbow was a sign and a seal of God's promise to Noah, Christ is our bow of promise encircling us in the time of trouble Genesis 9:13. Every thorn that wounds our feet has wounded His, and He will send help just when we need it.

⚓ Our Refuge in the Final Tempest

The storm is gathering with blackness around the moral horizon. We see the nations becoming angry and preparations for war being made. But we must not rest in a fancied security or dreams of universal peace 1 Thessalonians 5:3. Our only refuge is in the Sanctuary where Jesus is now blotting out the transgressions of His people.

When the waves break over our sinking bark and the lightning reveals the foam-capped breakers, we must remember that Jesus is on board. He who stilled the tempest on Galilee is the same Immanuel, "God with us," who is mightier than the noise of many waters Psalms 93:4. The Lord permits conflicts only to prepare the soul for peace. In the midst of the roaring storm, we can find a great calm if we put our trust in Him.

📢 Appeal: What Are You Going To Do?

The last lingering sands of time are falling. Soon the decree will go forth that he who is holy shall remain holy, and he who is filthy shall remain filthy Revelation 22:11. The four winds are being held for a little while longer so that you can be rescued from the coming storm of wrath.

What are you going to do? Will you continue to be a lover of pleasure more than a lover of God? Or will you turn to the Lord with all your heart while there is still a Priest in the Sanctuary to offer your prayers?

I entreat you to lay all your burdens upon the Burden-bearer. Come out of the confusion of the world so that you receive not of her plagues Revelation 18:4. The Savior is waiting to speak "Peace" to your tempest-tossed soul. Do not wait until it is too late to prepare, for the day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night 2 Peter 3:10. Choose today to be numbered among the servants of God, that you may be accounted worthy to escape and to stand before the Son of Man Luke 21:36.

⚓ Peace in the Midst of the Tempest: The Mastery of Jesus

👦 Children’s Story: The Best Place to Be in a Storm

Once upon a time, a group of brave fishermen were out on a big lake called Galilee. It was a beautiful evening, and their friend Jesus was so tired from helping people all day that He fell fast asleep on a hard wooden pillow in the back of the boat. Suddenly, the wind started to scream, and giant waves began to jump right into the boat! The disciples were scared and thought they were going to sink. They woke Jesus up and cried, "Master, don't You care if we die?" Jesus stood up in the rocking boat and said just three words to the wind and the water: "Peace, be still." Right away, the wind stopped blowing and the water became as smooth as a mirror. The disciples were amazed because even the wind and the sea obey Him. Children, we never have to be afraid when Jesus is in our hearts, because He is the Master of every storm!

🌊 The Sudden Crisis: From Calm to Chaos

The disciples had been with Jesus all day, witnessing His mighty works as He taught the multitudes in parables. As evening came, Jesus, wearied from His arduous labors, sought rest upon the hard plank of the fisherman’s boat and fell into a deep, refreshing sleep. But the Sea of Galilee is known for its sudden and furious storms. Without warning, the heavens gathered blackness, and a gale burst upon the water with such violence that the ship became the plaything of the waves.

The experienced fishermen, who had weathered many gales, now found themselves at their wits' end as the boat began to fill with water. In the darkness, illuminated only by flashes of lightning, they saw their Master lying undisturbed by the tumult. This crisis was a test of their faith, for they had forgotten that the Creator Himself was on board. How often we, too, battle the storms of life alone, trusting in our own strength until we are ready to perish!

🌬️ The Word of Power: "Peace, Be Still"

In their desperation, the disciples rushed to Jesus, crying out reproachfully, "Master, Master, carest Thou not that we perish?" Their hearts were grieved that He could rest so peacefully while they were in such peril. Jesus arose, and in His divine majesty, He stood amid the raging elements. He did not use His own power as a man, but He trusted in the Father's might.

He lifted His hand and commanded the angry sea, "Peace, be still." Immediately, the wind was bound, the panting waves throbbed into stillness, and a great calm fell upon the lake. The stars shone forth once more, and the boat sat motionless upon a quiet sea. This miracle was not a mere display of power; it was a redemptive act, proving that even the power of demons and the elements are under His control.

⚓ The Spiritual Lesson: Silencing the Storm Within

This miracle is a parable for every soul today. The Scripture tells us that the wicked are like the troubled sea when it cannot rest, for sin has destroyed our peace Isaiah 57:20-21. While self is unsubdued, the masterful passions of the heart are as uncontrollable as the raging storm on Galilee. No human power can quiet the strife of human passion.

But He who spoke peace to the billows has spoken a word of peace for every soul.

  • Justification by Faith: When we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ Romans 5:1.

  • The Work of Righteousness: The result of righteousness is quietness and assurance forever Isaiah 32:17.

  • A Present Help: Jesus is just as near to us in our trials today as He was to His followers on that stormy night.

If we have the Savior in our hearts, there is no need for fear, for living faith will smooth the sea of life. He bids us, "Be still, and know that I am God Psalms 46:10." It is in the silence of the soul that we can most clearly hear His voice.

🧱 Building on the Rock: Foundation for the Final Storm

The winds of the final commotion are currently being held by angels until the servants of God are sealed. But soon, a storm is coming that will test every character. Many are laying their foundation on the sand, and when the tempest beats upon their house, it will be swept away Matthew 7:26-27.

To survive the coming storm, we must:

  1. Be Doers of the Word: He who hears and does the will of Christ is the wise man who builds upon the Rock Matthew 7:24-25.

  2. Possess Practical Godliness: We must have a genuine conversion of heart and a life that reveals divine power.

  3. Trust in His Righteousness: Our only safety is in the imputed righteousness of Christ, not in our own works.

📢 Appeal: What Will You Do With the Master?

Friends, the standard by which our characters will be measured is the royal law of God. We are living in the "shaking time," and everything that can be shaken will be shaken. Are you ready for the final tempest?

I ask you today: What are you going to do? Will you continue to fight the storms of adversity alone, or will you cry out, "Lord, save us; we perish?" Jesus is on board the vessel of His church, and He will take care of the ship. Do not let the enemy rush you into hasty moves without God's counsel.

I entreat you to surrender your will to Him now. Let Him speak "Peace" to your heart today. Lay your burdens on the Burden-bearer and find rest for your soul. The harbor of eternal rest is just ahead, and if Jesus is your Captain, you will reach the desired haven in safety Psalms 107:30. Will you choose Him today?

III. The Word of Power: "Peace, Be Still"

  • The Cry of Desperation: The disciples reproach Jesus, doubting His care for their safety.
  • Divine Authority: Jesus does not act in His own human strength but trusts in the Father's power to command nature.
  • Immediate Restoration: At His word, the chaos instantly turns to a "great calm," proving His mastery over both the elements and demonic forces.

IV. The Spiritual Lesson: Silencing the Storm Within

  • The Internal Tempest: Human passions and the unrest of sin are compared to the raging Sea of Galilee.
  • The Source of Peace:
    • Justification: Faith in Christ brings peace with God Romans 5:1.
    • Righteousness: True quietness and assurance come from a right relationship with Him.
  • The Value of Silence: By being still, we learn to hear God’s voice above the noise of life’s trials.

V. Building on the Rock: Foundation for the Final Storm

  • The Coming Conflict: A final "storm" (judgment/crisis) is coming that will test every person's character.
  • Three Requirements for Safety:
    1. Obedience: Being a "doer of the word" rather than just a hearer.
    2. Conversion: Possessing a heart transformed by divine power.
    3. Righteousness: Relying solely on the imputed righteousness of Christ.

VI. Appeal: What Will You Do With the Master?

  • The Shaking Time: Everything that can be shaken will be; character is the only thing that remains.
  • The Invitation:
    • Stop fighting the storms of life alone.
    • Surrender your will and burdens to the "Burden-bearer."
  • The Final Destination: With Jesus as Captain, the soul is guaranteed safe passage to the "harbor of eternal rest."
