2 Corinthians 8:9

9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might be rich.

2 Corinthians 8:9 reveals the matchless grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, who exchanged the infinite riches of His heavenly throne for the extreme poverty of humanity to provide us with the eternal riches of salvation 2 Corinthians 8:9.

The Height from Which He Stooped

The grace mentioned in this verse is the manifestation of Christ’s love in leaving the royal courts above and the throne of the Father. Before His incarnation, He was the Majesty of heaven, the King of glory, and the Creator of worlds. He was equal with the Father in dignity and possessed all things by right of inheritance. Despite being "rich" in power, Holy Spirit, and heavenly honor, He did not grasp His equality with God as a prize to be held for His own use.

The Depth of His Humiliation

  • The Incarnation: Christ clothed His divinity with humanity, a nature inferior to His heavenly nature, which remains an unexplained mystery to mortals.

  • A Life of Poverty: He did not come to live in palaces but chose to rank with the poor and the toiling, having no place of His own to lay His head.

  • The Path of Sacrifice: His poverty was not merely a circumstance but a calculated part of His legacy and the great sacrifice of the atonement.

  • Enduring Suffering: He became a "man of sorrows," welcoming indignity and abuse for the sake of fallen man Isaiah 53:3.

The Purpose: That We Might Be Rich

The ultimate goal of Christ becoming poor was to connect fallen humanity with God, acting as the ladder that allows us to reach the heavenly courts. Through His poverty, we receive "immeasurable grace" and "eternal riches," which are defined as a life that measures with the life of God. These riches include:

  • Becoming heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ Romans 8:17.

  • The forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life Romans 6:23.

  • A restoration to loyalty and the original holiness lost at the fall.

A Motive for Christian Living

This verse serves as the grand spring and "most telling motive" for Christian giving and self-denial. Just as Christ gave everything—"emptied Himself"—His followers are exhorted to abound in the grace of liberality Philippians 2:7. True religion is evidenced when the heart is so filled with the love of Christ that it naturally exercises self-denial to help those in need, following the authoritative model of the Savior's life. Those who choose earthly wealth at the expense of these spiritual graces are considered poor in the books of heaven. Regardless of earthly position or race, all who believe in Christ are bought with this infinite price and become members of the royal family.
