Understanding the Living Union: What It Means to Abide in Christ

Is your connection to Christ a casual touch or a constant union?

What does it mean to abide in Christ?

Abiding in Christ is a daily, hourly living connection of faith where the human agent surrenders the entire soul to the guardianship and control of Jesus Christ. This experience is not a casual or occasional touch, but a constant union where self is hidden with Christ in God.

The Nature of Abiding

  • A Living Union: To abide in Christ is to be as closely connected to Him as a branch is to the parent vine, drawing all spiritual life and nourishment from Him John 15:4-5.

  • Surrender of Will: It requires an entire surrender of the heart and affections, where the old natural self dies so that Christ’s will becomes our will and His way becomes our way.

  • Faith and the Word: We abide in Him by a daily faith and by receiving His words into the heart as spiritual food, for His words are spirit and life John 6:63.

  • The Holy Spirit's Work: Christ dwells in the heart through the representative of His Holy Spirit, which brings the mind and attributes of Jesus into the life of the believer John 14:16.

Evidence and Fruits of Abiding

  • Transformation of Character: Those who truly abide in Christ will manifest His likeness in their temper, disposition, and actions, revealing a holy and blameless life.

  • Fruit-Bearing: Abiding naturally results in bearing "much fruit," which includes the graces of the Spirit such as love, meekness, and purity John 15:8.

  • Unity and Love: Because Christ is not divided, His presence in the soul leads to unity with others; those who abide in Him will love one another as He has loved them John 17:21-23.

  • Consecrated Speech: The talent of speech will be used to glorify God, avoiding unkind words, complaining, or "meaningless chit-chat," and instead offering words of comfort and truth.

The Necessity of Abiding

  • Spiritual Efficiency: Without this connection, all human efforts and "good works" are valueless, for apart from Him we can do nothing John 15:5.

  • Protection from Evil: Abiding in Christ is the only way to escape the corruption of the world and the only safeguard against the delusions of the enemy.

  • Rest and Peace: It is the secret to finding true rest for the soul and a peace that "passeth all understanding".

  • Missionary Labor: When Christ abides in the heart, a deep yearning for the salvation of others is awakened, leading the believer to work in Christ's lines for perishing souls.

Abiding is a mutual choice: when you choose to place yourself in His hands, He chooses to dwell in you as your Alpha and Omega, your guide, and your counselor. It is through this mystical, spiritual union that we are made partakers of the divine nature and prepared for eternal life.
