Understanding Communion with God: A Deep Spiritual Union
How does a living connection with God transform your daily character?
What does it mean to have communion with God
AdventAI
Communion with God is the life-giving, habitual fellowship of the soul with its Creator, where a person experiences a living connection with the Father through Jesus Christ. It is not merely a formal religious exercise, but a deep, spiritual union that transforms the character and imparts an intimate knowledge of the divine will.
The Nature and Method of Communion
True communion involves a twofold life of silent prayer and earnest work, where the mind is constantly uplifted toward Heaven.
Through Prayer and Word: It is maintained by frequent secret prayer and the diligent study of the Scriptures.
Through Nature: We can learn of God through His created works, as nature still speaks of its Creator and reflects His wisdom.
The Single Eye: It requires a "single eye," which is a disposition to look continually upon Christ, allowing His presence to pervade the whole soul.
Condition of the Heart: Communion is only possible when the heart is humble, contrite, and in harmony with God's law.
The Practical Results of Communion
When you walk in close fellowship with God, the results are visible in your daily life and interactions with others.
Moral Elevation: Communion imparts a moral elevation to the character and a persuasive power to the voice.
Love for Others: If you are in communion with Christ, you will place His estimate upon every human being and feel a deep love for those for whom He died.
Spiritual Strength: It is the source of strength that enables you to resist evil and endure the conflicts of Satan.
Peace and Joy: This connection brings a freshness, simplicity, and a sense of peace that shines through the countenance.
The Necessity of Secret Communion
While public worship has its place, secret communion is the vital link that sustains spiritual life.
Uninterrupted Time: Like Enoch, we must set apart periods for retirement to engage in holy meditation without interruption.
Soul Examination: In solitude, the soul is laid bare before God, and every motive is scrutinized in the light of His presence.
Divine Instruction: It is in the secret place of communion that God imparts heavenly wisdom and makes His purposes clear to our understanding.
Walking with the Invisible
Maintaining communion means living as if seeing Him who is invisible. We are invited to speak with Jesus as we walk by the way, recognizing that He is at our right hand Psalms 16:8. This intimacy is likened to supping with the Lord, denoting a closeness that prepares the soul for the eternal fellowship of heaven Revelation 3:20.
"Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God" Matthew 5:8. Those who maintain this habitual connection daily will find that their path becomes luminous with heavenly brightness, leading them toward the final triumph when they shall see His face in peace Revelation 22:4.
