The All-Seeing Eye: Understanding God's Infinite Knowledge
Can a God who knows your every secret thought still love you perfectly?
the omniscient God
AdventAI
God is the personal, spiritual, and eternal Creator who possesses infinite knowledge of all things, including the inner thoughts of the human heart and the events of the distant future. His omniscience is a fundamental attribute of His divine nature, inseparable from His infinite love, power, and wisdom.
The Nature of Divine Knowledge
Universal Scope: God’s knowledge is unbounded, meaning He understands the end from the beginning and nothing escapes His notice.
Perfect Insight: He reads the inner thoughts of the mind, the inclinations of the heart, and every secret feeling. Every detail of a person's history, even to the numbering of the hairs on their head, is recorded in the book of His providence.
Foreknowledge: God possesses divine foresight and foreknowledge, allowing Him to reveal future events through prophecy centuries before they occur. This foreknowledge does not compel human action but is compatible with personal freedom and choice.
Omnipresence Connection: Because God is everywhere present by His Holy Spirit, His all-seeing eye is upon all works in every location, and there is no solitude where He is not present Psalms 139:7-12.
Omniscience in Judgment and Law
The Perfect Judge: As the omniscient Judge, God measures every person by His commandments, which serve as the test of all righteousness. He alone is qualified to judge the hearts and motives of humanity.
The All-Seeing Eye: The realization that "Thou, God, seest me" acts as a powerful restraint against sin and an awakener of the conscience Genesis 16:13. For those living in secret sin, this sense of divine scrutiny can become an insupportable burden, yet for the upright, it is a source of comfort and a motive for circumspection.
Public Audit: Although God already knows every detail, He conducts a public examination or judgment to reveal the life records of the saints to the universe, ensuring that His final decisions are seen as just by all created beings Hebrews 4:13.
The Source of Wisdom and Truth
Infinite Wisdom: God is the source of all true wisdom, and human beings can only truly excel in knowledge when they are connected to Him. Every word He speaks is an opening into the mind of Omniscience, providing a pathway to infinity.
Superiority to Human Reason: Finite human minds are inadequate to fully grasp the purposes of Omniscience or the great truths of the Bible. While men may boast of progress, God sees the inward depravity and provides the only true standard of morality, which is His unchanging law.
Guidance and Care: God’s children are never absent from His mind. In His infinite wisdom, He places individuals in specific positions to test their loyalty or to advance His work, guiding them along the path to everlasting life.
Omniscience and the Character of Love
Attributes of Love: God's omniscience is a result of His love; because He is all-loving, He is all-knowing. Hatred cannot comprehend love, but love can see and understand all things in their true light.
Redemption: God’s foreknowledge saw the necessity of a Savior before the foundation of the world, leading to the plan of redemption through Jesus Christ 1 Peter 1:20. Christ Himself demonstrated this divine omniscience while on earth, knowing the hearts of men and the events that would befall His disciples.
To trust in the omniscient God is to depend on a power that never doubts, never makes mistakes, and always pursues a course consistent with eternal truth. Knowing that the eye of God reads every hidden thing, we are encouraged to make a full surrender and seek a transformation of the mind to be found pure before Him Psalms 139:23-24.
