What Is Truth? Exploring the Foundations of Divine Reality

Is truth merely an abstract theory, or a living, sanctifying power?

“What is truth?”

AdventAI

Truth is the divine revelation of God’s character, his law, and the gospel of Jesus Christ, which serves as the only secure foundation for our faith and the rule of all intelligence in heaven and on earth.

The Nature of Divine Truth

Truth is not a mere collection of abstract theories or human inventions, but a living, sanctifying power that originates with God himself. It possesses several essential characteristics:

  • Eternal and Unchangeable: Truth will live through all time and eternal ages; men may misinterpret or misapply it, but they can never convert truth into error.

  • A Complete Whole: The golden links of truth are not disconnected doctrines; they form a complete whole with Jesus Christ as the living center.

  • Simplicity and Depth: Christ revealed spiritual truths in the simplest language, yet these truths put the wisdom of the most educated thinkers to the stretch.

  • Authoritative: Truth is revealed by the voice of the highest authority that ever spake to man, one who understood every part of His subject.

The Foundations of Truth

God has provided clear landmarks and standards by which we can identify what is truth:

  • The Word of God: The Bible is the great standard of truth by which every man’s words must be tried Isaiah 8:20.

  • The Law and the Gospel: The law is the gospel veiled, and the gospel is the law defined; these two are blended in perfect agreement.

  • The Sabbath: The seventh-day Sabbath is one of the most sacred truths ever given to man, existing from the beginning of the world and continuing into the new earth Genesis 2:2-3.

  • Present Truth: God provides specific light and messages of warning suited for the particular time in which His people live, such as the third angel's message 2 Peter 1:12.

The Experience of Truth

Knowing truth requires more than intellectual assent; it must be woven into the very fabric of our lives:

  • Sanctification: We are sanctified through the truth when we delight to do God’s will and His law is within our hearts John 17:17.

  • Practical Godliness: Divine truth exerts little influence on the world through mere profession; it must be carried into our daily life and practice.

  • Experimental Knowledge: We must know God and the power of His love through a personal, heart-changing experience.

  • Meekness and Love: Claiming to believe the truth while manifesting impatience or an unforgiving spirit is "lying against the truth" James 3:14.

Discerning Truth from Error

In a time of widespread delusion, it is vital to be on guard regarding what doctrines we receive.

  • Diligent Study: Many fall away because they are lazy and inattentive students of the Bible; we must inquire diligently to know that we do know what is truth.

  • The Holy Spirit: Our understanding must be quickened by the Holy Spirit, for it is through His demonstration that truth is established.

  • Avoid Fables: Those unwilling to accept plain, cutting truths will be left to receive pleasing fables and strong delusions 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12.

  • Fruits of the Spirit: True religious movements are identified by their fruits; God's Spirit is not poured out on those who neglect or oppose His warnings Matthew 7:20.

Ultimately, the work of truth is to transform the human character so that we may correctly represent the ways and works of God to a fallen world. As we walk in the light of the Sun of Righteousness, the truth refines the soul and prepares us for the kingdom of God Malachi 4:2.
