I would be happy to help you explore that thought-provoking title! I will craft both a sermon and a detailed outline for "When Nothing Thinks It's Something" to help you unpack that message.

🌟 When Nothing Thinks It’s Something 🌟

Introduction: The Mirror of Truth

The greatest deception in the universe is not found in the world’s outward lies, but in the silent whispers of the human heart that say, "I am sufficient.". We often walk on "stilts of self-exaltation," looking down upon our brethren and imagining we possess a wisdom or strength that is entirely our own. Yet, the unerring light of God’s word reveals a different reality: that without a living connection to Christ, we are as helpless as a broken reed. To think ourselves to be something when we are truly nothing is to be caught in a dangerous delusion that imperils the soul.

🎈 The Little Red Balloon: A Story for the Children

Once there was a little red balloon that was filled with very special air. As it floated high above the trees, it looked down at the flowers and the grass and thought, "Look how high I am! I am much better and stronger than the tiny daisies on the ground." The balloon began to boast to the wind about its own greatness. But suddenly, it got caught on a sharp twig, and all the air went psshhh! The balloon fell to the ground, flat and wrinkled. It realized then that it wasn't the balloon that was great, but the air inside that gave it life. Just like that balloon, we might think we are very important, but everything good in us comes from God. Without His love and Spirit, we are just like that flat balloon. We must stay connected to Him to be what He wants us to be.

I. The Danger of Spiritual Pride 🛑

Spiritual pride is the most dangerous of all evils and the hardest to reach. It enters the heart like a parasite, fastening its deadly poison upon the boughs of truth. When a man considers himself superior in judgment to his brethren and despises their counsel, he evinces that he is in a terrible delusion.

  • Self-Deception: If any man thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself Galatians 6:3.

  • The Pharisee Spirit: He who sets himself up as full of wisdom, wrapping himself in robes of self-constituted dignity, manifests the spirit of the Pharisee.

  • A Door for the Tempter: Spiritual pride provides an open door through which the tempter enters to work upon the mind.

  • The Result of Separation: Divisions and discord in the church are the direct result of separation from Christ, the great Center.

The Jewish leaders were so filled with this pride that they loved the highest greetings and titles, eventually becoming so blinded they could not recognize the Son of God. We must be careful not to repeat their history by exalting our own acquirements while ignoring our individual spiritual needs.

II. The Reality of Our Helplessness 🕯️

What is the real difference between those who worship God and those who trust in "things of naught"? It is the recognition that man is absolutely nothing of himself. It is only by the Spirit of God that we are made, and by His breath that we receive life and understanding Job 32:8.

Before God, all nations are as nothing, counted as less than nothing and vanity Isaiah 40:17. When we assert that we are "something" while in a state of sin and separation, we are actually asserting self-existence and equality with God—the very lie Satan told in Eden. Jesus Himself, the Lord of Glory, declared, "I can of Mine own self do nothing". If the Savior of the world lived in such constant dependence on the Father, how much more should we, who are but dust?

True exaltation is found only in walking before Him in contrition and humility. To be a Christian means to be Christ-like, which requires us to come down from our "stilts" and serve our brethren in lowliness of heart.

III. The Remedy: Looking to Jesus ✝️

The only cure for the disease of self-exaltation is a constant, lingering look at the Cross of Calvary. When we live nearest to Jesus, we discern most clearly the frailty and sinfulness of humanity.

  • Self-Abasement: A view of the majesty and purity of Christ will always lead to self-abasement.

  • The Pattern of Meekness: We are called to learn of Him, for He is meek and lowly in heart Matthew 11:29.

  • The Work of Restoration: Instead of censuring the erring, those who are spiritual must restore them in a spirit of meekness, considering their own temptations Galatians 6:1.

  • Crucifying the Flesh: Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its affections and lusts Galatians 5:24.

As we approach the Center, which is Christ, we will naturally approach one another in unity. All boasting must be put away; we have nothing good or better than our fellow men except what God has given us.

IV. Living the Truth 👣

It is not enough to have a theory of the truth or to be able to present strong arguments. Membership in a church does not make us Christians. The fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance—must appear in the life temple Galatians 5:22-23.

We must watch and pray against the uprisings of ambition, the "malicious whisperings of green-eyed envy," and the "acid tongue of censoriousness". If we do not cultivate personal piety and purity of heart, our religious life will be eaten out by the vitals of spiritual pride. The Lord is watching to see if we will humble ourselves as little children, for only then can He work through us with almighty power.

Conclusion and Appeal 📢

"What are you going to do?". Will you continue in the path of self-sufficiency, or will you halt right where you are and seek a true conversion? God in His mercy desires to show you your wrongs so that you may repent and be reconverted.

The standard by which we must test our character is the royal law of God. It reveals our sin, but it also points us to the life-healing balm of the Cross. Do not let another blot of sin come upon your soul by cherishing pride.

I appeal to you today:

  1. Lay aside all self-justification and assume a yielding spirit.

  2. Stop looking at the faults of others and examine your own heart to see if the cause of trouble exists within you.

  3. Choose to stand with the humble, self-denying Redeemer now, for we cannot wait until the judgment to form characters for heaven.

"If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me" Matthew 16:24. Will you drop your pride and follow Him today? The Father calls you to live the life of Christ—to put away the passionate temper and walk in meekness. Come to the Savior, confess your helplessness, and let Him fill your "nothingness" with His "everything".
