Overcoming Unworthiness and Guilt Through Christ
How can you find your true value when you feel unworthy of God's love?
OVERCOMING GUILT Q: How to overcome the feeling of I'm not good enough, I'm not worthy to live a happy life and serve the Lord?
AdventAI
You can overcome the feeling of unworthiness by looking away from your own perceived failures and resting entirely in the infinite merits and perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, who bought you at an infinite price precisely because you were not worthy.
Understanding Your True Value
Your value is not determined by your own feelings of fitness or goodness, but by the price that was paid for your soul.
Bought with a Price: Jesus sacrificed His honor, His riches, and His glorious home in the royal courts to redeem you, making you His own property.
The Message of the Cross: This feeling of guiltiness must be laid at the foot of the cross, for the sense of sinfulness can poison the springs of true happiness if you do not accept that Christ has already taken your sins.
God’s Perspective: God does not see as man sees; He does not judge from outward appearances but searches the heart and sees precious material in what may seem like rough, unhewn stones.
Dignity as a Child of God: There is no human dignity that equals being called a son or daughter of the infinite God 1 John 3:1.
Moving Beyond Self-Reliance
The struggle with unworthiness often comes from looking inward to find a merit that does not exist in our fallen nature.
Stop Searching for Worthiness: It is a mistake to try to hunt up some worthiness within yourself to make you acceptable to God; instead, you must come to Him just as you are in your helplessness and hopelessness.
The Merit of Christ: Your only hope is to look to Jesus as your substitute and surety, knowing that His perfect obedience satisfies the claims of the law for you.
Complete in Him: You are saved not because you are sinless, but because the righteousness of Christ is imputed to you, making you complete in Him Colossians 2:9-10.
A Gift of Grace: All the fitness Christ requires is for you to feel your need of Him.
Restoring Self-Respect and Peace
God desires for you to maintain a healthy sense of self-respect while remaining humble before Him.
Regaining Your Standing: You may recover yourself from the snare of the enemy and regain your self-respect, standing not as a failure but as a conqueror through the influence of the Spirit of God.
Crucifying the "Unconsecrated Self": Our greatest conflict is with the "unconsecrated self," but when we conquer self through Christ, we are more than conquerors.
Daily Victory: By subduing self-love and self-esteem and looking to Jesus in faith, strength is given for every emergency.
A Life of Service: True joy and sunshine come to the soul when we labor together with God, helping others and reflecting His image.
Practical Steps to Follow
Look Away from Self: Keep your eyes upon the Lamb of God, who did no sin, for by looking to Him in faith you will become like Him.
Trust the Promises: When you do not feel comforted, do not despair; walk the narrow plank of faith and trust all on the promises of God.
Pray with Faith: As your humble prayers ascend, Jesus mingles them with the holy incense of His own merit, making them fragrant and efficacious before the Father.
Embrace the Spirit: The Holy Spirit can rouse every faculty to vigorous action, transforming your character and giving you a fitness for the society of holy angels.
Jesus invites you to come to Him for rest, promising that His yoke is easy and His burden is light Matthew 11:28-30. He says to you today, "Banish no longer your self-respect, for I have bought you with the price of My own blood".
