Overcoming Despair: When Life Feels Too Heavy to Bear
Is it a sin to wish you had never been born?
Is it a sin for someone to wish he wasn't born
AdventAI
While feelings of despondency can lead a person to wish they had never been born, it is important to remember that God has a specific plan for every life and desires us to find hope in His mercy rather than yielding to despair.
Understanding Deep Distress
Even the most faithful servants of God have experienced moments of such intense suffering and disappointment that they questioned the desirability of life.
Historical Examples: Elijah, a mighty prophet of God, once fled for his life and desired to die rather than to live because his spirits were crushed by the unfaithfulness of Israel.
The Experience of Job: In a day of extreme affliction and darkness, Job uttered the wish that the day of his birth might perish.
The Burden of Illness: Chronic suffering and disappointed hopes can lead a person to feel unreconciled to their lot and even murmur against the providence of God.
The Nature of Despair and Despondency
Despondency often involves a lack of clear thought and can be fueled by physical inaction, poor health habits, or heavy burdens that God never intended for us to carry.
Mental Anguish: Intense mental pain can eclipse a person’s view of God’s love and mercy, making them feel that their condition is hopeless.
Childish Feelings: Sometimes, giving way to despondency is the result of magnifying difficulties and indulging in self-pity, which requires a discipline of the mind to overcome.
Sinful Element: While God is deeply sympathetic to our pain, nourishing despondency is not wise because it makes us weak and gives the enemy an advantage over us.
Finding a Way Forward
God does not desire His creatures to suffer even an hour of pain that can be relieved. He invites everyone to cast their burdens on Him so they are not crushed by the weight of life's responsibilities.
Commit to a Helper: Jesus is ready and able to help whenever you call upon Him, and He is honored when you commit the keeping of your soul to Him.
Choose Happiness: While trials are real, we can choose to be happy by learning to sacrifice our own will to make others happy and by focusing on the promises of God.
Physical and Spiritual Restoration: Useful labor, physical exercise, and a simple diet can act as powerful agents in recovering health and overcoming mental depression.
The Hope of Salvation: No matter how sinful or despairing a person feels, the mighty Helper is near to grasp their hand and offer a seat with Him on His throne.
Praise the LORD, O my soul; while I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises to my God while I have any being Psalms 146:1-2. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end Jeremiah 29:11. Happy is he that has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God Psalms 146:5.
