Rudiments of the world

AdventAI

The rudiments of the world represent the first principles of a life separate from Christ, encompassing human philosophies, worldly traditions, and the bondage of sin that holds the unconverted heart captive Colossians 2:8. These elements are characterized by a reliance on human power and reasoning rather than on the divine strength found only in God.

The Nature of the Rudiments

The rudiments of the world are fundamentally opposed to the teachings of Christ and proceed from a carnal mind. They include the following:

  • Vain Philosophies: Human-made theories and "science falsely so-called" that attempt to explain divine mysteries through finite reasoning 1 Timothy 6:20.

  • Worldly Traditions: Customs and commandments of men that are often exalted above the law of God, such as the substitution of the seventh-day Sabbath for a human institution Matthew 15:3, 6.

  • Sinful Bondage: The condition of being "children of wrath," fulfilling the desires of the flesh and the mind before experiencing the redemption of Christ Ephesians 2:1-3.

  • Satanic Sophistries: Modern deceptions like spiritualism, phrenology, and mesmerism, which lead minds away from the Creator and toward self-exaltation.

The Bondage of the Elements

To be under the rudiments of the world is to be in a state of spiritual minority or "childhood," similar to an heir who is under tutors and governors until the appointed time Galatians 4:3. This state is described as:

  • A Condition of Sin: Being "under the law" or "under sin" before faith in Christ is received Galatians 3:22-23.

  • Alienation from God: Living without hope and without God in the world, subject to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life Ephesians 2:12.

  • Ceremonial Bondage: In a specific historical sense, it also referred to the ceremonial laws and ordinances that were a shadow of things to come, which brought the Jewish people into a form of provisional bondage until the fullness of time Colossians 2:16-17.

Deliverance Through Christ

Christ came to deliver us from "this present evil world" and its rudiments. True freedom is found only by being rooted and built up in Him Colossians 2:6-7.

  • Completeness in Him: Believers are complete in Christ, who is the head of all principality and power, and do not need any supplement from human sources Colossians 2:10.

  • Dead to the World: If a person is "dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world," they are no longer subject to the ordinances and commandments of men Colossians 2:20.

  • Separation from Error: We are strictly warned to beware lest any man spoil us through philosophy and vain deceit that follows these worldly rudiments rather than Christ Colossians 2:8.

Adopting the principles of the world into the church or the personal life is a form of rebellion that makes the law of God void and divorces the soul from the only Source of wisdom. To escape this, one must return to the first principles of the divine life and the plain truths of the Word of God.
